Over the Horizon
“Be the best that we can be: we are superwoman.” These catchy lyrics from Superwoman, sung by Titi
DJ and Ashanty, accompanied by some fun dancing beats by Eka Gustiwana, have been my theme song well into 2022. Since its release at the end of last year, Superwoman has seen millions of views, and we are happy to present the trio for an exclusive January cover. Read on their stories inside, Beyond the Beats, where they discussed the messages and inspirations for the song. I especially love the theme of women empower- ment depicted in the video besides having the lines, “The world is our oyster, and we are the treasures.”Similar to how the diva Titi DJ and Ashanty are seizing the day and having a grand time is Svida Alisjahbana. Small in stature yet larger than life in personality, this dear friend of mine is unstoppable. Recently, she became the Head of the Permanent Committee for Gender Equality at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce. Svida and her team at GCM
Tatler Group are also the brains behind the continued success 8 of Jakarta Fashion Week, including its ingenious
transition into the virtual realm for the past two years. Inside, she elaborated how these changes and incorpo- rations of technology help drive conversations forward.
On another note, we present the gallery of our recent 21st-anniversary celebration in Bali: Tatler #kemBali. More than a party to relish over our milestones, this event was to show support for Bali’s revival in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Tatler Indonesia also collaborated with Plastic Bank Indonesia to help manage the waste while educating others about the importance of recycling for the good of us all. Indonesia is a country with a youthful population. According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2021, the percentage of the Indonesian population aged between 15-24 years old was 17.44%. This demographic fact underlines the important role of the youth in shaping Indonesia’s future, particularly in building the country’s wealth. As the backbone of the nation, the youth have the potential to create a better future for Indonesia. It is crucial for the government and other stakeholders to invest in the youth’s education, health, and social well-being. By doing so, they can be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to become productive and responsible citizens who can contribute to Indonesia’s development.

As we navigate the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, sustainability has become an urgent priority not just in Indonesia, but around the world. At Tatler Indonesia, we believe that it is our responsibility to raise awareness about sustainability issues and promote sustainable practices in everything we do.
In this issue, we are excited to feature articles that highlight the importance of sustainability in Indonesia, as well as the innovative ways in which individuals and businesses are working towards a more sustainable future around the world. From personalities that are making changes to the controversial human composting, these articles showcase the diverse and creative approaches being taken to address sustainability challenges in Indonesia and worldwide.
At the same time, we cannot ignore the global
nature of the sustainability crisis. Climate change and environmental degradation are problems that affect us all, regardless of where we live. That’s why we have also included articles that examine sustainability issues on a global scale, from the impacts of rising sea levels to the role of renewable energy in the transition to a low-carbon future.
As an editorial team, we are particularly passionate about empowering the youth to take action towards sustainability. The next generation will be the ones most affected by climate change, and it is essential that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a difference. That’s why we have included articles that showcase the incredible work that young people are doing to promote sustainability in their communities for environmental justice.
We are committed to supporting and amplifying the voices of young sustainability leaders, not just in Indonesia but around the world. We believe that the youth have the power to drive positive change and make a real difference in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.

Strong women have the ability to shape the world, and more of them are needed. Strong women have an inner strength that allows them to overcome the roadblocks that are constantly placed in their path. They see roadblocks as stepping stones to greater empowerment and achievement rather than as obstacles they must overcome. Strong women strive to maintain optimal physical and mental health to contribute to programmes and practise promoting equality. A strong woman is happy! Most spiritual seekers have come to recognise that happiness must be experienced now rather than later. But, more importantly, we must remember that happiness is our genuine inner strength and power. Strong women have shaped the world throughout history. Some did it inconspicuous ways that society honours and remembers long after their deaths. Others have worked quietly for women’s rights and equality. They have, however, all brought about a change in their unique ways and deserve our gratitude for the significant advances they have made for women’s rights worldwide.
Also, while we are on women’s topics, art is also close to women’s hearts. 

Today of all days, let’s take a moment to rejoice in the one thing that makes the world go round! Valentine’s Day was originally intended for the singles among us. A day set aside for people to express their interest in potential suitors has since been taken over by romantic couples. Forget about romantic love. Instead, let us celebrate (and practice) a different kind of love. The practice of celebrating love on 14 February has grown into a global event since the middle of the 18th century. On this day – Valentine’s Day – we are encouraged to celebrate a specific kind of love. A kind of love that is based on a “romantic ideal” involving two people, usually a man and woman, who have “feelings for each other”. But consider this from a broader perspective. It doesn’t have to be romantic, just love, in all its simplistic goodness.
What exactly is love? When we look at the dictionary definition, we see something straightforward, almost tangible. “Love is unconditional selflessness.” 
Love is so often celebrated through the creative arts because it’s something intrinsic and present within all living beings. To be loved, you don’t even have to be alive! We love people who have left us or those who have yet to be born. Love is what gives us wings to fly, the motivation to get out of bed in the morning, and the drive to create life. We are hardwired to seek care and connection from the moment we are born. Patterns of encouragement and generosity, or scolding and deprivation, provide cues for relationship building. We learn which behaviours are rewarded with emotional support - and which are not - as early as our first two years of life when we are developing our personalities, memories, and perceptions of the world.

Now, start-ups in Indonesia are becoming a big thing, too, as more and more young Indonesians become entrepreneurs and create new businesses from scratch. So what exactly is a start-up? Simply put, it’s a business venture that’s relatively new and under three years old. There are plenty of new ideas being developed which will really shake things up in a good way, and they’re giving solutions to many problems that we have today. As more and more start-ups emerge, there will be new leaders born from them. These leaders will lead the way to change the future of Indonesia. In this issue, you can learn from these great leaders and gain insights about how they became leaders—who they are, what their roles were when they first joined their companies, how they grew in their positions and what skills they used to become influential leaders in the future.

Front & Female is Tatler’s platform for women to be their best selves; it celebrates trailblazers, breaks taboos and tackles timely issues The key to looking great isn’t following all of the latest fashion trends. It’s staying true to your personal style. Finding your style is part of a slow fashion journey. Sometimes the terms “fashion” and “style” get used interchangeably. But there is a subtle difference between the two. Fashion refers to the collective expression of trends and the dominant styles within a given culture at a certain time. Whereas style relates to the individual and how they choose to interpret collective ideas of fashion in alignment with their personal expression. Sometimes our style reflects our culture. As for us Indonesians, we are blessed with cultural diversity, which can all be translated into our personal style. Cultural heritage is the legacy of physical artefacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations. One of the heritages is batik. Fashion could be one of our ways to preserve our heritage.

Generation Entrepreneurs
October is rolling, and we know it is our Gen.T month. The annual Gen.T List recognises 300 leaders of tomorrow who are shaping Asia’s future. They are the trailblazing entrepreneurs and creatives driving positive impact and catalysing change in Asia. We have our 26
honourees from Indonesia this year, and we couldn’t be more proud of their achievements in the last 18 months. To refresh your memories, our honourees must tick all of the necessary boxes by a number of quantifiable metrics, which are the growth of the business, fundraising success, a new product or service that’s disrupting an industry, increased geography of impact, receiving respected industry awards, and more. As we cover up to many different industries, we don’t have only one set of metrics. You’ll meet them and their companies’ stories every month in every Tatler Indonesia edition. If we are talking about Gen.T, we also talk about being an entrepreneur. What comes to mind when you hear the word “entrepreneur”? Maybe you picture a talented college dropout or a seasoned business professional with a knack for predicting the next big thing. Whatever the persona, replace it with yourself.
There’s no specific demographic or personality profile of a successful entrepreneur. No matter your age, race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or upbringing, you can be an entrepreneur if you have dedication, drive, and vital business skills. If you are considering becoming an entrepreneur, there are several essential skill sets that you must develop to increase your entrepreneurial success. Hard skills—like technical and financial skills— can be fundamental to managing a business. Soft skills–like communication and leadership–can also ensure you develop as an entrepreneur.

September, the beginning of Fall in most parts of the world. We, in Indonesia, also celebrate Fall through fashion. Though constantly a thrilling change of pace, fall fashion trends generally amount to the same old sweater or denim combo with some iteration of a black boot, but not this year. Summer isn’t quite over yet, but we’re already looking ahead to the season of Fall’s bright colours like pink, corset fashion style and the resurrection of bowling bags. Here you’ll find the best wish list of fall fashion trends for fall 2022 to start shopping right this very second. Not just fashion trends; in this issue, we are covering women who are making impacts. Our cover story shares the lives of six powerful women who are inspiring in their industries and how they help others around them to be and do better in life.

Inclusion Diversity Revolution
Today’s world is facing a big shift; this time, we
are discussing humanity’s problems. Inclusion and
diversity.
Indonesia is also facing the same shift. As a
country famous as an agrarian nation, Indonesia is a
big country with over 17,000 islands and a 273.5 million
population. We have thousands of different cultures,
skin colours, backgrounds, races, ethnicities, et cetera.
We can not be divided. We need to be united; therefore,
we are strong. Although the words ‘inclusion and
diversity’ have been around for centuries, sometimes
problems still arise. People can not accept differences.

Let’s talk about diversity. It is any dimension
that can be used to differentiate groups and people
from one another. In a nutshell, it’s about empowering
people by respecting and appreciating what
makes them different in terms of age, gender, ethnicity,
religion, disability, sexual orientation, education,
and national origin. And inclusion is a sense
of belonging. Inclusive cultures make people feel
respected and valued for who they are as individuals
or groups. People feel a level of supportive energy and
commitment from others to do their best at work.

Love Me Do
Having a wedding ceremony you can call your own, gives you a feeling of having a prized possession. The ceremony allows you to celebrate your commitment and love in front of the people you hold dear.  There is so much love and happiness all around! The bride and groom are happy. They are filled with a tremendous amount of love. The family and friends are also happy - happy for their loved ones that will soon be united in marriage. Your wedding ceremony is where your marriage officially starts. It’s where it breathes life, and it’s where it takes shape. Marriage is more than a ­physical union; it is also a spiritual and emotional union. 
And before the new life begins, there will always be a wedding ceremony, a party, a celebration. The wedding party serves as a support system to the ­couple in their new marriage, encouraging their love and helping them see through arguments and fights long after the wedding day. So many symbols and ­analogies are present as part of a wedding ceremony. We all know the famous cutting cake tradition, the first dance and bouquet toss. It is one of those ­photo opportunities that graces every wedding album.  The cake cutting represents the first activity done as a couple. The part when the bride and groom feed each other a small bite of cake.  This can be romantic and sweet, symbolizing a commitment to provide for one another and a show of love and affection. 
Did you know, it is thought that a person­sleeping with a piece of wedding cake under her pillow will dream of her future partner that night. This custom dates back almost 300 years and is ­often practically combined with wedding favours being tiny, perfect replicas of the wedding cake. Speaking to the singles, you might want to try!
Another fact that might surprise you turns out that the most important element that contributes to the success of a wedding reception is actually the food.  Food tasting and having the right ­vendor at your reception are crucial.

Vision of Future
Vision gives us a sense of purpose and guides us as we work in the present. In organizations, a vision statement articulates what the organization aspires to accomplish. Visionary people are big picture people. They do not get stuck with unnecessary details. When the vision is clear, the ultimate goal is also evident not only to you but also to those whom you lead. Despite being bombarded with information from multiple sources, we are able to filter through what is essential and what is not. Visionary leaders want to try new things, find new opportunities and know how to stay the course. Visionary leaders are natural pivoters and hold multiple perspectives. They can keep the big picture in mind but remain flexible in how to get there. A flexible mind helps them navigate challenges more effectively.
While investors focus on quantifying goals and deciding the “best” investments to make, we believe that financial values, commitment and vision have been the backbone of any financial journey, even though they were there subconsciously. With being a visionary in mind, comes forecasting the money we are making. Therefore we need a ‘money mission statement’.
A money mission statement helps align spending with one’s dreams and wishes when one asks the question of whether or not every expenditure one makes supports that money mission statement. Staying focused on your financial goals can be difficult. You know what they are. And you know you’ll be better off if you stick to them. But you also have a lot going on in your life. This statement helps you visualize your financial goals and reminds you why you’re looking to accomplish them. It describes what you want to attain financially and how you are going to produce your desired results.

Mission Sustainable
The road to entrepreneurship is often treacherous, filled with unexpected detours, roadblocks, and dead ends. It’s more than being a business owner; it’s a perspective and a lifestyle. When you hear the word “entrepreneur,” you are often shown an image of successful people with profitable, rapidly growing businesses. The reality is, according to data, 45% of new businesses fail within the first five years. I’ve had my share of failing over the first five years of building my business. But you live, and you learn. Giving up is not an option. Moving forward with the belief that your business will one day thrive is what’s needed. And not just thrive, but will the business make an impact?
Nowadays, building a business is not just about sales. It’s about the story. It is about who you help along the way. It’s about impact. It’s about sustainability at its core. It encompasses how natural systems work, continue to be diverse, and yield everything required for the environment to remain in balance now and in the future. 
It all started within. It all started from what you want the world to see what your business and your story are all about. Sustainability is the key to a better future and a better business. Humans rely on natural resources for business, activities, and survival. Ignoring sustainability can lead to the exhaustion of natural resources. According to McKinsey, having a sustainability strategy allows a company to make long-term investments. A do-nothing approach can mean a more significant loss in the future when it comes to sustainability. We don’t want that. We want to prosper as mother earth prospers along with us. 
So what can we do, as entrepreneurs, as business owners, to keep the company alive while maintaining sustainability? Effectively becoming more sustainable may not be easy at first, but the challenge is well worth the reward. Successful entrepreneurs, owners, and leaders look at problems as opportunities.

Feminine Power
What makes a woman confident is her ­ability to call upon her feminine wisdom. What makes a woman confident is her capacity to ­listen to her true self and call upon her feminine ­wisdom to any situation that may arise.
Feminine power is beautiful, graceful, ­nurturing, creative, and warm. There is power in being. There is power in silence. These are the feminine qualities that we may not think of as powerful initially, but as we explore them, the strength becomes ­apparent. Feminine power is focused on feelings and emotions, and women need to accept that. 
It’s the balance to masculine power, the yin and yang, if you will. Regardless of the world being out of harmony with feminine and masculine power, we can find balance within ourselves by embracing both sides of the equation. As we cultivate our feminine energy, we can redefine the meaning of strength. By embracing our feminine power as potent in its own right, we can use it with true assurance and ­determination and draw upon what truly belongs to us. 
There’s no trying with Goddess energy. Your ­inner feminine energy recharges your vitality, you age ­gracefully, and you feel fulfilled instead of exhausted. When you wake up tomorrow, notice how many things are running smoothly how many small miracles compose your day. As you take in your world, you might feel a moment of gratitude for the basic fact that, once again, the sun has risen to illuminate the abundant earth. The earth’s gravitational field holds you and all that you hold dear in a tight, life-affirming embrace and that you are a woman of your own.
But most of all, I am proud of this edition; we at Tatler Indonesia recognise the women who are making
an impact!

Art Attack
In the discussion of whether life imitates art or vice versa, I would like to weigh the factor of digitalisation. Both aspects are becoming more malleable, noting the quick advancement of the metaverse. As the cryptocurrency rises and falls with NFT pieces trade quickly within minutes, art has entered the digital sphere with a bang. Thus we dedicate this edition as a starting point to join in the myriads of discussions surrounding these topics. 
Start from the NFT for Dummies article to freshen up your vocabulary before delving into pieces about notable artists Zhang Huan and Murat Pak. Beyond all things digital and virtual, we live in earthly realities and still appreciate a good, physical exhibition for a change. Our monthly art column, curated by my good friend Deborah Iskandar of ISA Art&Design;, constantly updates us on past and future events to visit. This month’s Eye to Eye coverage, from a recent exhibition at Galeri Nasional, talks about connectedness in solidarity, which also resonates with us in this digital era.
With all these focuses on art, surely we cannot overlook our cover and cover story with the same treatment. Collaborating with artist Anton Ismael famous for his photography and painting works, art and fashion translate into these pages with much zest. Rr. Ayu Maulida Putri as the muse further helps showcase the artistry and future of young Indonesian designers. Furthermore, the article New Frontiers Ahead delves into her experiences as Puteri Indonesia 2020 and what lies ahead in her journey. Family Matters
As the proverb goes, “blood is thicker than water”, this month we explore the meaning behind familial bonds and how they help create who we are today. In all its shapes and forms, the nuclear family usually plays the central role in someone’s life, often extending beyond the home area into the business realm to a varying degree of success. In the case of Fitria Yusuf, as she shared with us in the cover story, continuing her father’s work at Citra Marga Nusaphala Persada is now part of her legacy. Fitria also takes on many of his charity works and runs other businesses with her brother—all with great success and flourish.
One might argue that working too closely with your family would only bring trouble as boundaries blur and differences collide. Her secret? Working through differences and turning them into ways to support instead of points of conflict—plus, leave the business talk off the dinner table. Good communication skills might be reasonable for starters, so we also talked to six pairs of mums and daughters to further explore their ways. In light of the Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day celebrations, their stories in My Daugther, My Love would bring you much joy and warmth.
Of course, the communities around us also play a sizeable role in how we live our life. As the Tatler Indonesia family extends into many of society’s top circles, as always, each month, we present a selection of noteworthy events for your enjoyment. From weddings to birthdays and many more milestones in between, may these memories help to strengthen our bonds with beloved family and friends. Noting that the pandemic is still much present around us, despite the fewer and smaller gatherings we do, I hope that “absence and distance make the heart grow fonder”.

Time of Wonders
“Time flies”, as the tried and true adage goes. With 2021 coming to a close, it seemed Indonesia has learned to live with the Covid-19 virus—for better or worse. Personally and with Tatler Indonesia, we have become a witness to how humans persist and prevail in the face of uncertainties and adversities. There is no better place to read some of these ­eminent stories here in our newly-refreshed Asia’s Most ­Influential list. Akin to the long-running, highly-regarded ­Society list, this is the definitive guide to who’s who in Indonesia: the movers and shakers in society ­today making changes in 19 different industries. 
“No pain, no gain”, as another saying well-applied to these figures in the list, we could be inspired by their story, such as Susanti Tio. Our lovely cover star is a well-regarded businesswoman who had to weather the extreme fluctuation of coal prices for the past two years. However, she refused to lay off her workers and even opened more business ventures to support small home industries. Read on inside for more of her story, part of a detailed Asia’s Most Influential list featuring 50 names, with the rest available at indonesiatatler.com and tatlerasia.com.
Totalling 300 names from Indonesia, these are the people who have made the most of their time, especially the past two years, and emerged better for themselves and society. Whereas the previous Society list geared closer towards the mature names, our local and regional teams have refreshed this year’s listing to include rising young stars. I hope that you will take time to reflect and be thankful for any progress in 2021 and be ready to start anew come 2022.

A Thing of Beauty
Swift like the wind, yet another year during the pandemic whizzed by, and here we are in the penultimate month. With life mostly changing even as we speak, Tatler Indonesia’s 21st anniversary takes on a more subdued tone. Despite the uncertainties around us, I have learned to see the beauty in the simplest moments of life. Both at work and during leisure time, even the tiniest joy becomes meaningful when taken in balance.

Take our cover star, for example, featuring the dapper dr. Oky Pratama Dipl. AAAM. The aesthetic doctor enjoys his passion within the beauty world and also takes it as a calling to better the overall industry here. Despite his busyness in opening eight more clinics this year, adding to the existing 12 clinics over the past four years, he finds time to rest and recharge. Similarly, another dear friend of mine, Guo Peng, is a prolific calligraphy artist with an exhibition coming up. For him, time of quiet also means reflecting on life, which would then colour his art. into successes abound in this edition, within the younger generation and the more mature ones. Talents aside, one common thread is to practice with perseverance. Reading the profile of Danny Masrin would be a perfect example, coupled with the story of Rajkania Sarwono and Susanti Tio as her muse. On that note, I learned much about investing wisely in time for the good things in life. As one of our mottos goes, to live an extraordinary life is close at hand when life is in a peaceful balance. Here is to a much better year ahead for all of us, no matter the storm and tempest coming our way.

Suffice to say, Tatler Indonesia is the leading ­luxury lifestyle magazine covering stories and ­fashion that matter most for the country’s high societies. ­Behind their glittering dresses or tailored suits, each of these figures read as a book on lineage and legacy. Go the Distance
“When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. As the famous proverb goes, this year has not been an easy ride for any of us. However, with determination, we have survived thus far—and Tatler Indonesia has been a constant companion to the journey our people and country are going through. Innovation and creativity come to the fore to overcome limitations and redefine our everyday norms. These qualities are some of the criteria we use to curate the annual Generation T (Gen.T) Asia list, in which 23 youths represent Indonesia from a diverse set of industries. 
Generation T is a content and community platform for young leaders shaping Asia’s future where we celebrate the entrepreneurial drive and disruptive spirit of entrepreneurs and creatives across the region. A big congratulations to this year’s chosen honourees for their recognition and welcome to the community of leaders of tomorrow! Similarly, a drive to strive for the good of others is what unites the beautiful mother-daughter pair May Farida and Callista Daniella Bachtiar. In our cover story, Under Your Wings, they talk about persevering in passion for the things that matter most in life. 
May and Callista’s familial stories bring to mind Steven Kusumo, currently the CEO of Agung Sedayu Group. The young leader shares how the family empire pushes through the global economic slowdown and prepares to launch many big projects. Innovation and creativity play a big part for this renowned property developer to create new and exciting concepts, including The Langham, Jakarta, at Sudirman SCBD. I cannot wait to enjoy my afternoon tea at Alice there once the situation relaxes more since the luxury hotel upholds the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Like most of us who had come to know about Mien Uno, I noticed myself inspired by her energy and charm. An accomplished businesswoman and educator, her wit and smarts are also found in Mien’s successful sons, Indra and Sandiaga. However, I only got to know her husband recently and understood the complete picture. Although Henk, as he is widely known, is a modest figure who prefers to remain in the background, his quiet strength and wisdom have supported the Uno family all these years.

It was no small feat to raise children to become a leading businessman and a prominent politician; and, yet Henk and Mien succeeded in passing on their legacy of love. They are the better versions of their parents, as Henk and Mien had carefully guided them each step of the way. By listening in to the pair’s affectionate banter with one another, hat’s off to the Uno family for their unity in caring for the small things entrusted to them for the grander scheme in mind. Of course, August is the month of Indonesia’s independence, so we have to include more figures who are contributing their bests to the country.

Take Lusyani Suwandi, for example, who is already a hard-working legislator under the Nasdem Party. With the Covid-19 pandemic ravaging here, she felt called to build Hamera Lab to provide highly accurate yet affordable testing for everyone. Movie director Angga Dwimas, on the other hand, is helping keep the industry afloat during this difficult time. He created the pay-per-view Bioskop Online platform to stream Indonesian movies to promote local talents, especially when movie theatres are still closed. These stories are what make our nation continues to thrive and stays strong despite adversities going our way. I hope you are all remaining hopeful for these, too, shall pass.

Success comes in many forms and measurements, and Tatler Indonesia has the privilege to witness such stories from the world’s finest talents. For myself, success is also a journey rather than a destination from which we all could learn precious lessons to grow into a better person. Our cover star Calvin Yong, for example, has risen among the top ranks of the F&B industry after a bankruptcy. On a larger scale, there is the Hadiprana family in command of the art, property, design and hospitality empire now running under its second and third generation. Struck by a recent mishap at one of its properties, in addition to the struggles brought by the pandemic, the days ahead looked bleak. Their toils all these years, however, have not gone unnoticed, and loyal patrons of the brand still came seeking the Hadiprana experience. More stories of success growing from passion further pepper our sections, starting from The Scene that includes venture capitalist Arya Setiadharma, and next to the Style section with Ganni. While these figures might be young, their passions and efforts show promising results: Arya in growing successful startups around Indonesia and Nicolaj and Ditte Reffstrup in pioneering luxury Danish street-style cool. Ah, the warmth of the sun with all the positive energy it brings. Especially today, as the Covid-19 pandemic draws on, and being outdoors is a much-welcomed respite after prolonged time spent indoors. This spirit of positivity amid uncertainties, that we would survive and even thrive in the face of hardships, is what our cover star radiate. Many of you might have known and loved actress Dian Sastrowardoyo since her early rise to stardom as Cinta in What’s Up with Love?. Today, despite the slowdown in the movie industry, she is expanding her knowledge and roles as part of her internal journey. Discover more about her inner-growth and -beauty in Coming Full Circle.
Next up, with the same positivity to do the best with today’s situation, is Irfan Setiaputra. He assumed the position of president director and CEO of Garuda Indonesia just a few months before Covid-19 arrived in Indonesia. Although Irfan does not have it easy, I admire his strategies to keep our flag carrier flying proudly, such as using consumer-centric approaches to keep everyone safe and comfortable during flights. Besides the culinary world, these expressions of creativity and communication are best seen and ­enjoyed in the fashion realm. As part of a global ­community with local roots, our stylish pages will often see ­traditional textiles beside big-name brands. A Beacon of Beautiful Minds and Heart of the Art are two must-read articles in this edition. The first ­article touches upon the beautiful spirit of our national ­heroine, Raden Ajeng Kartini, and the beauty of kebaya and kain as a collaboration titled “My ­Generation: ­Women and Kartini”. Meanwhile, the second ­article sees yet another series of specially-made batik by Benang Ratu and Garuda Kencana Batik for dignitaries and ministers.

The Art of Life
Fashion for society, a tenet now we, at Tatler Indonesia, holds when it comes to curating and crafting the contents within. Just shy of one year since we rede- signed the magazine and its digital channels, I hope our hard work since then is much evident today. Entering into April, we extend this theme into the showbiz world with two stars this country is familiar
with: Jeremy Thomas and Luna Maya. Although they represent two different decades and gender groups, both talents share the same passion for fashion and artistry in content-making. Read more in Raising the Bar for a riveting read about where their artistic visions have taken them to a peak of success and fame.
 Going deeper into the arts, we are honoured to have Guntur Soekarno guest-write about his photography hobby and showcase some portfolios. Guntur is one of five children of Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, from his marriage to Fatmawati. Sharing the same penchant for the arts as his father, Guntur explores the beauty of Indonesian women. After a long hiatus from the photography world, his return proves that time has not dulled anything; see the article In the Eyes of the Beholder. Next, read Go West for a special interview with Chloe Zhao upon best director at the Golden Globes. The first Asian woman to do so, and the second woman ever, her story and journey until today is a heartening example of women staying true to themselves to achieve success.
On that note, the story Bright Lights of the Hearts nicely round our wholesome articles this month with a lineup of modern Indonesian women finding their inspirations in R.A. Kartini. The latter is a respected heroine who helped women reached emancipation and earned education during the colonial era, a vision shouldered today by the Maria Lukito Foundation and these ten ladies. We The Women, March has always been a fun month for the team at
Tatler Indonesia and myself due to International Women’s
Day—a theme perfectly embodied in our cover muse,
Dewi Sukarno. To say that Dewi is a beautiful and
strong woman would be oversimplifying the wisdom
and wit that has made her an endearing and enduring presence anywhere she goes. 
Many readers might have been familiar with her story as the third wife of
the late President Sukarno. Met and wed during the
founding father’s last living decade, Dewi had to leave
her homeland in Japan for a brief yet blissful married
life here. Soon, however, the political instability in
Indonesia forced her to flee abroad and only allowed
scant goodbye with her dear husband on his deathbed.
Fast forward a few decades and countries she’s moved
around, we caught up with the lovely lady to see what
Dewi has been up to and what’s next for her. Moreover,
our editors also talked to three other prominent women
to see how women fare and flourish in today’s Indonesian society. 
The article System of Support paints quite a
picture of the successes and struggles that helped shape
them to be the inspiring leaders we see today. We list

We Are Family

For many among us, February is a celebratory month of love for romantic notions. However, I beg to differ. This month should likewise be to appreciate all types of love, especially for our family, friends and Mother Earth. Moreover, showing our love through actions should extend beyond February. In that spirit, this edition touches upon the different aspects of love and see them through the contexts we live on today.

One great example is in Love is A Many-Splen- doured Thing. We talk to experts and practitioners about modern dating life and how to keep relation- ships healthy. Then there are stories of friendships between ladies who bicycle and the lovely Hans Huang—all of which are surviving the Covid-19 pan- demic. The coronavirus reminds us also to take better care of the environment; three familiar faces show
us how they garden at home in Rub of the Green.

Our cover story, meanwhile, balances up nicely the love for family and self. The young heiress Jacqueline Sariman is pursuing her passion in the startup world Tatler together with the work she inherits in her family’s 10 empire; no small feat, I would say, for which I applaud
and encourage her all the more. Of course, to show our appreciations for those around us, small tokens of love would help amp up the affections. Scrolling through these trendy pages, our editors have rounded up lists of fashionable and precious items to have and to hold.
Turn the pages to our Wish List, which is all about the latest wardrobe from top to toe. Some of the same designers featured here are also making a comeback in Keeping House, this time for haute homeware. So, pop a bottle of champagne, doll up the dining room and put on your best fashionable foot forward: it’s timeto celebrate love and its many-splendoured things. Chin-chin!

“The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare
and beautiful of all.” Some of you might be familiar
with, or even relate to, the quote above as spoken by the
Emperor in Disney’s animated Mulan. I found the quote
rings true both to myself and the Tatler Asia magazines
for surviving the year 2020 with its radical changes due
to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Season of Grace
Amid the uncertainties happening in 2020 with the Covid-19 pandemic still at large, December is a time to celebrate and to be thankful. Even for the smallest ­daily joys, this is the season to stay optimistic and look ­forward to a better year ahead. Tatler Indonesia ­continues to be present in its printed form all year long, and we are proud to close the year with a bang by unveiling the ­Impact List. Standing alongside their regional counterparts, in this list are the ten leaders and changemakers from around Indonesia. They are the ones who are preserving against all odds and now recognized as forces of good in society. Read the complete list of 100 names across all industries inside.
On the note of power and purpose, we talk to the young leader Natalia Kusumo who is taking part in her family business, Agung Sedayu Group. With a sweeping vision to develop a new township in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area, her ideas and concepts brought a fresh perspective to the developments by the property giant (read more in “The Good Life”).
