With nine new references, IWC Schaffhausen’s Le Petit Prince continues to conquer horology’s most emotional frontier.
LUXURY WATCHMAKING LOVES A HERO, and it is usually a diver who braved the abyss or a pilot who conquered the sound barrier.
And deservedly so. Yet, for 20 years, one of the most successful, coveted, and enduring franchises in modern watchmaking has belonged to a fictional child who lives on an asteroid, cares for a single, temperamental rose, and spends his days contemplating the infinite sadness of a sunset.
To mark two decades of its collaboration with the heirs of French writer, poet, and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, IWC Schaffhausen has debuted its most expansive Le Petit Prince collection to date.
It is a milestone that prompts a fascinating question: how did a 1943 allegorical French novella become the emotional anchor for a powerhouse Swiss watch manufacturer? The answer lies in the DNA of Saint-Exupéry himself. He was a man of two worlds—by profession, a daring pioneer of early commercial aviation who charted mail routes across the Sahara; by vocation, a philosopher-poet who used the isolation of the cockpit to dissect the human condition. For Saint-Exupéry, flight was not an escape from reality, but an ascent into clarity. The infinite blue sky was a vantage point where the trivial noise of earthly existence fell away, leaving only what was essential.
