In the first quarter of the year Vietnam’s economy grew by an estimated 5.5-5.6 per cent, higher than the 5.06 per cent recorded in the same period last year. Full-year economic growth may well reach the 6.2 per cent targeted or even as much as 6.4 per cent if conditions are favorable, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Dao Quang Thu told the ministry’s monthly meeting. The forecast is similar to others made recently. One was from ANZ, which revised its GDP growth forecast in 2015 and 2016 upwards, to 6.5 per cent for both years from the previous 6.2 and 6.4 per cent. Four reasons behind its forecasts were the faster expansion of industrial production since 2012, the production of construction-related materials picking up, a rapid rise in average real growth in retail sales in the first two months year-on-year, and growth in the sales of all types of motor vehicles.
