Southeast Asia is on the cusp of major renewable energy advances, with 154GW of additional capacity planned for the next five years. If achieved, these developments could offset 55GW of coal power annually, meeting 70% of the region's electricity needs by 2030. While this is a promising outlook, ASEAN countries still face the challenge of reducing reliance on coal-fired power plants while transitioning to renewable energy sources.

Asian governments are increasingly getting involved and actively supporting clean energy projects.
Indonesia has recently issued a regulation to limit coal power plants to speed up energy transitions. Meanwhile, India will mandate a minimum consumption of energy from non-fossil fuel sources in several sectors. On the other hand, many Southeast Asian nations are still struggling to change
the negative public perception of nuclear power, despite it being a potential source of clean energy.

With the skyrocketing coal and gas prices, Asian markets are looking to make use of previously
untapped fuel resources and developing strategies to make their energy supply more diverse and secure. Offshore wind particularly has strong growth potential in Asia, but the industry could face headwinds as governments determine fitting policies.

In this issue, we highlight some significant obstacles to the ongoing sustainability and net-zero initiatives of AsiaPacific’s power sector and the potential stakes if carbon pricing is not imposed. Southeast Asia, in particular, faces an uphill battle in the deployment of carbon capture, usage, and storage technology without carbon pricing.

Governments globally are targeting to achieve a sustainable future and are leveraging renewable energy for their power generation. In this issue of Asian Power, read how hydrogen is expected to account for a larger share in the energy mix than the 12% of natural gas in the Asia-Pacific region as governments pursue net-zero. 

Asian Power also sat with Joseph Jacobelli, author of the book titled Asia’s Energy Revolution. He discussed the energy consumption in Asia, which he expects to be more than half of the world’s energy. The region is also expected to step up its game in adding cleaner energy sources and veer away from fossil-fuel based generation. The issue also tackled other efforts made in some Asian countries for more sustainable energy such as in Thailand and by the Asian Development Bank in the Philippines. 

This issue also delved into the future of coal in the region, having 80% of new coal power plant capacity expected to come from five countries in Asia, despite targets of some countries to reach net-zero. China, for one, has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. The issue also explored where biomass energy stands in Asia’s power mix.
