“Someone turn off the central heating!” I yelped as my tiny feet touched the boiling hot sands of a golden beach in Saint Malo in Brittany, France — or so goes the story, according to my mother. I was three years old and had never encountered such heat, having grown up in the northwest of Ireland. It was our first family trip abroad and my toasted toes and frantic scuttle back to the relative safety (and coolness) of my flip flops was our first indelible family travel memory.
There were many more moments added to the collection in the years that followed: the endless circumnavigating of that roundabout at Cherbourg Harbour; my father’s umbrage with a labour of moles who taunted him every sunrise with a fresh fortress of hills in La Rochelle and our water fight outside of Rome’s Colosseum as we forewent cultural enrichment for Philistine fun. All silly memories. All special memories. All shared with the people I cherish most.
