Willkommen To Fredericksburg,Texasi
Natural Solutions|May 2017

“Oxen can’t walk backwards.” This is the kind of information, southern drawl and all, that greets you as you journey to Fredericksburg, Texas. After a short drive through the rolling terrain of Texas Hill Country, this fun fact was followed by an explanation. “Oxen can’t walk backwards, so the original German settlers of Fredericksburg made the main street wide enough for a team of oxen to turn around completely without any traffic jams.”

And the subsequent citizens of the town didn’t think there was any reason to change the road, or much of anything else. In fact, Fredericksburg is one of the most historic cities left in the United States. With more than 700 recognized historic sites, you can see the German heritage in the architecture that’s still standing on Main Street, and you can even hear it—some of the locals still speak fluent German.

Fredericksburg wasn’t created to be a tourist town, and you can tell as you walk the streets. But even when you’re just a guest, you’ll be welcomed by everyone you meet on your Fredericksburg adventures. There’s an incredible amount of things to do in the city, but here are a few of my favorite stops to help you narrow it down.

WHERE TO STAY:

Fredericksburg has numerous hotels and other places to stay, but I was really impressed with the lodging at the Fredericksburg Herb Farm. They have a collection of Sunday houses perfect for a quaint getaway. The one-room cabins are newly renovated so you have the comfort of a modern bathroom while experiencing their cozy, historic charm. As if the Sunday houses and beautiful butterfly gardens weren’t enough, the Herb Farm’s Nature Spa and Farm Haus Bistro are also on the grounds, making breakfast, yoga, or a massage just a short jaunt away.
