Ginseng the “ALL-HEALING MAN ROOT.”
Alternative Medicine|February 2021
Ginseng is one of the most popular herbs worldwide. It has been used as an herbal remedy in Asia for more than 5000 years. In many countries, it has been used in traditional medicine. and as a nutritional supplement that improves the well-being and quality of life and promotes longevity. In TCM it is renowned for restoring the yin and yang. There are over 8000 studies concerning Korean Red Ginseng in PubMed, indicating the significant interest it has generated.

Most Asian ginseng in today’s market is cultivated in the field for 4 to 6 years. The root of the Korean ginseng plant, including the smaller lateral roots, is the part that is used for its medicinal properties. Ginseng is classified into three types, depending on how it is processed after harvest: fresh ginseng (can be consumed in its fresh state), white ginseng (dried after peeling), and Korean Red Ginseng (KRG). The “red” in Korean red ginseng refers to a preparation method of the plant. Red ginseng root is steamed and dried Panax ginseng. Technology for the long-term storage of red ginseng was developed by pioneers in ginseng production. KRG is used in various traditional oriental medicine formulations and as a nutritional supplement in Asian countries despite its specific processing method and related high cost.

Ginseng is referred to as an “adaptogen,” which are defined as agents that support the body’s ability to accommodate varying physical and emotional stresses. Or to translate they are substances that are supposed to help the body better cope with mental or physical stress. According to the Herbal Classic of the Divine Plowman, published around 101 BC, Asian ginseng was able to “support the five visceral organs, calm the nerves, tranquilize the mind, stop convulsions, expunge evil spirits, clear the eyes, and improve memory.”

Discovering Whole Person INTEGRATIVE EATING

The idea to explore a multidimensional, ancient-food-wisdom approach to food and eating had its genesis in New Delhi, India, where my co-author and husband, behavioral scientist Larry Scherwitz, Ph.D., had been invited to present at the First International Conference on Lifestyle and Health. Chopra—father and mentor of Deepak Chopra, M.D., who is an integrative medicine and personal-transformation pioneer—about a magazine article I was intending to write on yoga and diet.
