Most Asian ginseng in today’s market is cultivated in the field for 4 to 6 years. The root of the Korean ginseng plant, including the smaller lateral roots, is the part that is used for its medicinal properties. Ginseng is classified into three types, depending on how it is processed after harvest: fresh ginseng (can be consumed in its fresh state), white ginseng (dried after peeling), and Korean Red Ginseng (KRG). The “red” in Korean red ginseng refers to a preparation method of the plant. Red ginseng root is steamed and dried Panax ginseng. Technology for the long-term storage of red ginseng was developed by pioneers in ginseng production. KRG is used in various traditional oriental medicine formulations and as a nutritional supplement in Asian countries despite its specific processing method and related high cost.
Ginseng is referred to as an “adaptogen,” which are defined as agents that support the body’s ability to accommodate varying physical and emotional stresses.
