A Sunscreen For The Hot And Humid Climate Of Pune

This thirteen storey residential building by SAV Architecture + Design takes inspiration from the historical character of Pune’s gardens and the existing trees on site with branching as a central concept to create a self-supporting facade network that will generate sun shading, an aesthetic identity and distinctive moods within the apartments.

THE WHITE TREE

In 2013, Montpellier city council launched the “Folie Richter” competition. It sought to identify a blueprint for a beacon tower to enrich the city’s architectural heritage. The RFP stressed the desire for a bold project that had to fit into its environment and include shops and homes. The brief was clear: city hall wanted a team made up of a young architect working with an experienced colleague.

Inspired from the fiery nature of the sun, the architects created the house with local red laterite stone exterior walls, large sunscreens as well its double-height brick inner entrance and living spaces.

Standing tall, flaunting uninhibited strength underneath a cloak of simplicity, this healthcare facility is a result of a brief full of questions for its existence. While questions on physical identity, architectural presence & personality in context with locality routed the initial germs of the façade development, patients care vs attendants’ care, progressive zoning, backend movement vs forefront movement & a confident desire to heal through air, light, colours & nature guided Interior design development.

The stepped house was a challenging assignment as the plot was quite small to accommodate all the spaces required for a joint family comprising of 10 members.
