Demolition is approved for unsafe buildings in town centre

TORBAY Council has secured the legal go-ahead to demolish unsafe buildings in Paignton’s Station Square.
The privately owned row of buildings has been cordoned off since May, after fears that they would collapse. Large pieces of masonry fell into the road below shortly after the fences were installed. Now the council has been granted a Consent Order by local magistrates, which means it can proceed with full demolition. Gilpin Demolition, which carried out the initial emergency works, has been appointed to undertake the demolition.
In a statement, the council said the safety of residents, businesses and visitors had always been paramount. “Where privately owned buildings are allowed to deteriorate to a dangerous condition, the council has the legal powers to intervene and will do so when necessary,” it said.
