Lakshmi was busy in conversation with her best friend Mini. Break had just got over and there was chit chat all around.
“Students, get back to your places!” said Srimati teacher as she entered the class. Lakshmi was a fifth-standard student. It was history period and her favourite subject as well. Once they had all settled down, her teacher started teaching them all about the Indian freedom movement. Lakshmi was intently listening to her teacher, when a circular arrived.
“So students, this year we will be conducting cultural programmes for Children’s Day. Those who are interested can give in their names for dancing, singing, acting and other programmes. The full list is up on the notice board. Give your names to the respective teachers in charge,” informed her teacher. There was lot of excitement and the children discussed their plans with each other.
Lakshmi thought to herself, “Yes, I can dance well, but can I do it up on the stage? How do I dance in front of so many students?”
Tring….Tring….it was the bell. Lakshmi came out of her thoughts as her best friend Mini came running to her, “Come on Lakshmi, let’s give our names for dancing.”
“Hmmm…yeah but let me think about it. I am not sure if I can perform on stage,” said Lakshmi.

Earthy Expressions
Folk art and tribal art are easily recognizable - bright colours, bold strokes, quaint ways of representing people and animals. Many actually tell a tale! India being a vast country and with so many agricultural communities and tribes living close to nature, many art forms have evolved. Many have all but disappeared. Fortunately, there is an interest in such traditional art forms and efforts are being made to revive some of them. In the next few months, we will embark on a journey learning more about some of such art forms.
