Distribution 4.0 : Future of the ‘farm-to-fork' enterprise
Progressive Grocer
|February 2020
A cross-section of industry leaders representing distribution firms and FMCG brands congregated at India Food Forum 2020 to discuss the future of food distribution in India. Important points that were brought up included the challenges for both established players and startups, the disruptive impact of technology and also the new opportunities and direction for the industry. The discussion was moderated by K. Radhakrishnan, Co-founder, starquik.com and Director, Grocery, Omni Channel Retail – Tata Fiora Online and Dhananjay Sen Gupta, CEO (Small Formats), Future Group.

Retail distribution is looking at a major upheaval in the coming years, especially with the adoption of cloud and mobile technologies. With greater empowerment of retailers and the advent of consolidated distribution systems, consumerism is expected to move from push-based to demand-based.
Technology is bringing up numerous opportunities for advancement in distribution. These include integration of information flows across stakeholders, flexibility and balance with demand and inventory levels and greater efficiency as well as optimisation in distribution and warehousing. But these changes can be truly daunting for traditional players who are not tuned to the new ways of business. This brings up important questions like the role of data and technology in accelerating this transformation, and its implications for FMCG brands.
Sudeep Goenka, Director, Goldie Group, kicked off the discussion with a crisp articulation of how modern retail is impacting the landscape for traditional FMCG brands. Goldie Group started off as a brand for Tier II and III cities, and has slowly but steadily built a presence in metros as a provider of quality spices and food products. “One of the major challenges is catering to the multiple verticals that are being created in the market today – in terms of modern trade, regional modern trade, standalone stores and the online models. We typically come from a very conventional model of appointing super distributors, distributors, wholesalers and retailers,” said Goenka.
