Joeanne Wong of Can-Care reveals that navigating life with the big C need not be a scary, lonely journey

When Can-Care was founded in 1997, it was a center solely dedicated for female breast cancer patients. “Can-Care was established to help breast cancer patients cope with the after-effects of treatments by providing them with emotional support and empowering them to find some normalcy in their lives,” shares Joeanne Wong, General Manager at Can-Care.

Today, Wong proudly exclaims that their post-care services and expertise have since expanded far beyond breast cancer. She says, “With a team led by dedicated professionals with nursing and medical backgrounds, Can-Care aims to help newly diagnosed cancer patients, cancer survivors, as well as their families cope with the special needs of patients and the changes they are experiencing with their body and lifestyle.”

In ordinary situations, who should provide emotional care and support to cancer patients?

This is usually done by clinic nurses, especially when the doctor first breaks the news to patients. There are also some patient support groups and NGOs that provide similar support to patients as well.

Are there other medical professionals who can step in to provide this type of care?
