The key to South Africa’s energy crisis is to harness the abundant energy of the sun, says Thorsten Ronge, Managing Director of SMA South Africa
Around 10 years ago, Germany was the biggest solar market in the world. This, with annual radiance levels of solar power that reach Germany’s surface being between 900 to 1,200 kWh per square metre. In sharp contrast and depending where you are, South Africa has 1,800 to 2,400 kWh per square metre and year, so it definitely makes sense to utilise all that natural energy because the payback time on your infrastructure will be so much shorter,” says Ronge. “The energy of the sun is unlimited and we just have to utilise and harvest it. The best part is that the sun doesn’t hit you with a heavy utility bill!” he adds.
Born and educated in Germany, Ronge’s passion for solar has seen him live, work and study on five continents. He went straight into the world of solar after studying environmental engineering in Germany and completing his Master’s degree in Business and Engineering in 2002.

Artificial Intelligence
Is artificial intelligence reinventing insurance? This was the question posed by Bill Hoggarth, national sales manager, Digital Business Solutions at high performing and secure ICT solutions provider, Datacentrix. He was speaking at the recent Robotics, Drones and AI in Insurance Conference, held in Rosebank, Johannesburg. In answer to the question, Hoggarth clarified that no, he did not believe artificial intelligence (AI) was changing the nature of insurance–at least, not on its own. “My view is that AI is not reinventing insurance, but that it is part of the mix of technologies that is causing a shift in insurance today,” he said.

Empowering Our Future
More than half (51%) of youth aged 18–24 years claim they do not have the financial means to pay for their tertiary tuition. That is over 1.4 million youths who will never be able to afford to take their education further and thereby increase their opportunities to progress in their careers and lives. This is the sad reality according to the Higher Education and Skills in South Africa report released by Statistics South Africa in March 2019.
