Artificial Intelligence
Is artificial intelligence reinventing insurance? This was the question posed by Bill Hoggarth, national sales manager, Digital Business Solutions at high performing and secure ICT solutions provider, Datacentrix. He was speaking at the recent Robotics, Drones and AI in Insurance Conference, held in Rosebank, Johannesburg. In answer to the question, Hoggarth clarified that no, he did not believe artificial intelligence (AI) was changing the nature of insurance–at least, not on its own. “My view is that AI is not reinventing insurance, but that it is part of the mix of technologies that is causing a shift in insurance today,” he said.

Leading The Future
Leading the modern world requires fast thinking and an impulsive ability to adopt and adapt to the technologically driven era. The way we conduct business today has drastically changed from the way business was conducted ten years ago, failing to integrate innovation and technology could prove fatal to any business.

Empowering Our Future
More than half (51%) of youth aged 18–24 years claim they do not have the financial means to pay for their tertiary tuition. That is over 1.4 million youths who will never be able to afford to take their education further and thereby increase their opportunities to progress in their careers and lives. This is the sad reality according to the Higher Education and Skills in South Africa report released by Statistics South Africa in March 2019.

German flavour
The last time I felt so much power in my hands was when I was driving the Maserati Quattroporte. A beast on the road with the sound to boot. The CLS however is plain sexy, aggressive and not too loud. Put simply it’s the executives dream car. This demon on wheels has a 210kW six-cylinder diesel engine which makes the sedan sprint from zero to 100km/h in a swift 5.7 seconds. Though I didn’t quite get to those stats I must say I have no doubts about that aspect.

Good governance
Over the past 50 years, an “unnoticed apocalypse” may have killed off half the planet’s insects. This is the opening line of a World Economic Forum feature on 25 Nov 2019. It is a sign of the times that this is getting the attention of the World Economic Forum and we really need to sit up and take notice.

Leadership
In an increasingly competitive world, businesses win over customers through providing excellent customer service. We see this in the digital technology tsunami sweeping across the world. Companies like Amazon, Google and Samsung are few of the many who are relentlessly innovating to retain competitive advantage. The 4th Industrial Revolution, globally, is driven by consumer demand for cheaper and more efficient services!

Mine Closures in South Africa
The world is going through a relatively radical shift, which has put special emphasis on the concept of Sustainable Development across multiple industries. This has significantly affected the way we do business and the legislations we are governed by, requiring us to change our attitudes. Mining can be viewed as diametrically opposed to the tenet of sustainable development, however, it’s no exception to this new reality which is why mine closures and mine rehabilitations need to be conducted well.

User privacy in a technological age
Arguably the most pervasive technology conspiracy is that your smartphone is listening to your private conversations. We have all felt some discomfort with the types of advertisements that pop up on our phones. Have you ever had a conversation or searched for a certain product on your browser, only to start seeing ads that correspond exactly with that conversation or browser search? Do you ever get the distinct impression that your phone is tailoring pop-up and SMS ads for you and your specific interests, without you knowing how it got that information? And it is an “open secret” that your mobile device uses your personal information in order to tailor your user experience. But to what extent? And with whose permission?

Sport, honesty and the nation
Many of us want our Rugby World Cup win to have lasting impact and continue the feeling of goodwill it generated amongst millions of South Africa. We felt it in the lead up to the final, and strongly during the game, with people gathered throughout the country watching it. We felt it even more so as the final whistle blew, and again at the Springboks homecoming welcome at OR Tambo, followed by the victory parades.

Leadership magazine is aimed at dynamic middle and senior business managers and directors, entrepreneurs, an influential political class and those who aspire to leadership roles, across all sectors of the economy.
