Rich Countries Are Breaking Their 1.5°C Obligation: CAN Study
The latest national climate plans (NDCs 3.0) of developed countries expose a stark truth: those most responsible for the climate crisis are still refusing to lead its solution. A new analysis by Climate Action Network (CAN) International finds that every developed economy fails all three tests of a fair and 1.5°C-aligned pathway - ending fossil fuel production, delivering public climate finance, and ensuring a just and equitable transition.

LPG Sector To Face Mounting Pressure Without Green Banking Facility
Compared with other fossil fuels, LPG is a much cleaner source of energy. That's why, if Bangladesh is to achieve its goal of clean cooking for all by 2030, there is really no alternative to LPG. But the sector is now under immense strain after years of heavy investment. Many companies are already struggling, while others are on the brink of collapse. To prevent further damage, the government needs to step in with low-cost financing to help stabilize the industry. Bringing LPG under the Bangladesh Bank's Green Fund could be a practical step toward easing the crisis. It's also worth noting that LPG is the only energy segment in Bangladesh that operates entirely without subsidies, a fact that deserves recognition and support.

LPG DESERVES MORE ATTENTION IN GAS-STARVED BANGLADESH
It was in 1997 when Bangladesh first started importing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) amid declining availability of natural gas. Laugfs Gas Bangladesh, a company of Sri Lanka-based multinational Laugfs Holdings, was given the first permit to import and distribute LPG in cylinders to meet the growing demand in energy-starved Bangladesh. Since then, the LPG sector has witnessed an exponential increase in consumption-from 2.5 lakh tonnes in 2009 to the current 1.5 million tonnes a year. The clean-burning fuel has earned popularity for a number of reasons. In rural areas, it has made cooking easy and comfortable by replacing the smoke-causing wood and tree leaves. LPG is environmentally friendly too. The more LPG is used, the greater the saving of trees and woods.

LPG Policy Must Be Long-Term, Safe, and Inclusive
Price control is another major issue. In neighboring India, subsidies ensure that LPG is affordable for ordinary households. Bangladesh, by contrast, imposes taxes and VAT, making LPG more expensive while leaving private operators to subsidize consumers from their own pockets. This imbalance is unsustainable.

LPG Business Is The Maintenance Of Safety: The Bangladesh Context
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has emerged as a vital energy source for Bangladesh's domestic, industrial, and transport sectors. The LPG market in Bangladesh has experienced remarkable expansion over the past decade. As the nation transitions from a reliance on natural gas to a diversified energy mix, LPG offers a clean, efficient, and portable alternative. However, the very properties that make LPG convenient—its flammability, explosive nature, overpressure hazard, and wide use—also make it a significant safety concern. Fires and explosions have become increasingly frequent in Bangladesh in recent years. The LPG business, therefore, is fundamentally about maintaining safety throughout its lifecycle—from production, storage, and transportation to consumer use.

Bangladesh's Energy Transition: Fragile Today, Renewable Tomorrow?
Few countries illustrate the challenges and opportunities of Just Transition as clearly as Bangladesh. On one hand, Bangladesh is one of the most climate-vulnerable nations in the world, as per the World Risk Index, ninth for Climate disaster risk (2023). Almost one-fifth of its land lies less than one meter above sea level. Each year, millions face the threat of cyclones, floods, saline water intrusion, and drought. So, climate change is not a distant worry for Bangladesh; it is already shaping daily life, from migration to food production. On the other hand, Bangladesh has minimal fossil resources. Apart from natural gas and a small amount of coal, the country has little of its own. Ironically, despite this scarcity, Bangladesh has built an energy system that is heavily fossil-dependent. Imported oil, coal, and LNG play a major role in power generation. This has made the country vulnerable to price shocks and created a huge fiscal burden from subsidies.
