AMIDST CHALLENGES AND HOPES
Pope Francis, whose papacy is still in its infancy, has shown great openness to dialogue and has reached out to the political spheres of China. On the other hand, Xi Jinping’s rising to the presidency of the People’s Republic of China has raised some hopes for better times for Christianity in the country. Catholics and other Christian Churches have long been persecuted. But, despite persecution, a wave of interest in Christianity has brought in many new believers, particularly from the young. This is a consoling reward for the missionary efforts carried out in various forms. However, the difficulties felt by foreign missionaries, to openly do mission in Mainland China, brought about a change in their role – from being protagonists to mere collaborators. Hopes for diplomatic talks between the Vatican and Chinese authorities are high. But there is a pervading feeling that diplomacy is not enough. Some concrete steps are needed to pave the way for political, social, cultural and religious openness.
