LOVE FOR THE UNLOVED
The present issue of World Mission magazine pays a simple and yet profound
homage to the newest saint of the Catholic Church, Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
In this missionary month, we recall the life and vocation of one of the greatest
saints of modern times. Called a “mystic in action” by Archbishop Thomas
Menamparampil of India, Saint Teresa struck others by her deep sense of
compassion, selfless attention to others and unfailing resilience in the face of
difficulties. She is an example to emulate. Being a saintly woman did not spare
her from inner struggles, as revealed by Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, the official
postulator for the canonization of Teresa of Calcutta. It is known that Mother
Teresa struggled with interior darkness for decades, a spiritual condition of
loneliness and abandonment lived in an intimate union with Jesus Christ.
Hence, the title “Saint of Darkness” is applied to her. Indeed, this strong
spiritual experience spurred her to a self-sacrificing dedication to the poorest
of the poor. All her vocation was devoted to restoring the human dignity of the
unloved and the rejected in society.
