In search of a better life
The latest report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
denounces the death of 4,027 people in the first seven months of 2016.
They were migrants and refugees who lost their lives in the Mediterranean
Sea, originating from North Africa, Syria and Afghanistan. This year’s
death toll of migrants represents an increase of 26% in relation to the
same period of last year. This migration phenomenon has brought in a
challenge of huge proportions for Europe, the desired final destination
of these migrants and refugees. Divided over how to go about in dealing
with the crisis, E.U. countries resorted to building fences and sealing off
Europe’s internal borders. A deal with Turkey to stem the flow of people has
been criticized as a moral failure. In the midst of this human tragedy, there
are good examples of welcoming and integrating the migrants into the
receiving countries. The Darwish family with seven children, from Syria,
was welcomed in Portugal in the year 2015. This issue of World Mission
features this family as an example of resilience, courage and hope.
