STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL
Indigenous people represent a minority in the societies; they constitute
approximately five percent of the world’s population. Due to their low social
representation and peculiar identities, they have not found their way into the
mainstream way of life of contemporary cities. Historical prejudices have led
to their seclusion, and in worst cases, being chased off from their traditional
habitats. They lag behind in terms of social and economic development, being
the most impoverished groups in their countries. They are poor, illiterate and
unemployed, making up 15 per cent of the world’s poor.
This edition of World Mission features the struggle of two ethnic minorities
– the Lumads from the Philippines and the Rohingyas from Myanmar – for
their survival. The Lumads have been fighting for over two decades against
the mining activities of multinationals in their ancestral lands. And they have
paid with their own lives this stand off against the government and powerful
economic groups. The Rohingyas are denied citizenship and being chased off
from their own country by their own government.
