GROWING DEMAND
Widespread water shortage in the world is, today, an undeniable reality. However, it is not yet felt by many who live in urban centers, where water flows abundantly out of an open faucet. People use water without realizing its source or, often, the long trajectory it has run to reach one’s home. Two major factors causing water shortage are climate change and the world’s growing population. When demand for water exceeds the available amount during a certain period – because of prolonged droughts and/or mismanagement of water resources or when poor quality restricts its use due to deterioration of water resources – the consequence is, of course, scarcity of water.

International agencies, such as the U.N., are committed to resolve this water crisis by 2030. However, in many parts of the world, the dire need and the growing demand for fresh water is such that national and local governments have to put contingency measures in place to ensure that their populations may have access to this precious liquid of life.
