THE ART THAT NURTURES FAITH
Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz became internationally renowned for his “Homeless Jesus” sculptures. Being both a devout Catholic and a great artist, he saw the potential of his artistic works to draw people into meditation, reflection and prayer. At the same time, his art works also have the potential to call people’s attention to concrete problems, inviting them to be challenged and moved in faith.
The artwork, portraying a life-size, homeless Jesus lying alone on a bench, is a reflection of the millions of the excluded and marginalized in our increasingly industrialized society who, among the growing urbanites, do not have a place to call home. Instead, they find shelter on street corners, benches, improvised cardboard beds and, for the luckier ones, in spaces provided for them to spend the night, only to return to the streets the following morning. In many places, the Vatican included, the “Homeless Jesus” has found a place. But whether He finds a home in human hearts, hearts that nurture faith and commitment to the poor, remains to be seen.
