BRIDGING THE GAP
A conscious analysis of history and a clear reading of the present times brings us to realize that, often, religion or religious ideologies, once radicalized, can easily become a source of division, conflicts and wars. This is a too common scenario in many parts of the world today with terrible consequences – oppression, abuse of people, disrespect for human dignity, and even for life itself, with massive killings in the name of God. Before such a scenario, dialogue, particularly interreligious dialogue, has to emerge not just as a temporary remedy to avoid greater tragedies but as a privileged way to bridge the gap between religions and even civilizations. With outmost awareness of the different sensitivities of believers, dialogue does not aim at a compromise between religions to attain peace but, rather, to lay the foundational values, commonly accepted and valued by different religions, that can unite the different faiths in upholding basic human rights, bridging, in this way, the differences and laying the path that eventually may lead to peace.
