ANTIDOTE TO FUNDAMENTALISM
Religious fundamentalism and hostile inflexibility to beliefs and religious norms stand contrary to a world that is in constant transformation and in an ongoing process of change. Without denying the basic beliefs of faith, openness to change and self-transformation are required to live in this pluralistic and globalized world. The Church itself has had its own experiences of aggiornamento, Vatican II being one of the most significant. This is not a privilege of a moment of grace but a necessary process of renewal to provide more adequate answers to people who live their faith in an ever-changing world.
Change, therefore, requires both the capacity to respect the beliefs of others, recognizing and valuing differences in faith, and the humility to acknowledge that we need to be renewed inwardly. A fundamentalist approach to religion has, in the Resurrection of Jesus, the most powerful antidote. The Resurrection itself is a symbol of radical change and a model of social transformation and renewal.
