Issue #17 is our tribute issue for Mr. Iwata, the beloved President of Nintendo who lost his battle with cancer in July 2015. A celebration of his life and achievements forms the core of the issue’s content in the Features section, the Retro section looks back on some of his most obscure games, the Interview section compiles quotes directly from the man himself and much, much more. It’s cover-to-cover Iwata, in memory of a great man taken from us far too soon.

No series has hype cycles quite like Smash. Masahiro Sakurai has absolutely mastered the art of fanning fandom into flame – every reveal, every bit of new information that's released about an upcoming Smash sequel brings the entire Nintendo community to an immediate halt. Everyone stops, cheers, spends days or weeks analyzing every tidbit and each little detail, then gets hungry for more and the cycle within the greater cycle turns and turns again.

The hype leading up to the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been especially potent given the shortened timetable between the game's official reveal and its upcoming on-sale date. It was just given its unveiling at E3 this past June, and it's going to be in our homes on December 7! Not even half a year to cram character reveals, music announcements, gameplay details and more into, and it feels like the time has been flying by. 

I'm thrilled to be able to contribute to the excitement for all of you who are anticipating this sure-to-be massive hit. This issue of NF Magazine is going all-out for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! It's our biggest issue ever, as we've added 16 more pages beyond our normal page count in order to be able to fit in a huge full-roster feature article that gives individual attention to every single playable fighter in the game. Then we've got some Smash-related comics sprinkled throughout, our Interview section welcomes the all-time greatest competitive Smash player ZeRo, our print editions are shipping out with massive double-sided wall posters featuring the whole cast . . . it's big. I truly hope it gets you even more hyped for Smash, as just working on it has sent my mind over the edge of excitement!

In this issue of NF Magazine, we’re doing things a little differently. We almost always award our front cover position to an upcoming game, then seek to theme the content inside to match that game and support some aspect of its design, its world or its characters. This time around, though, one character alone is in our spotlight. The one. The only! Waluigi!

Because, by golly, if Masahiro Sakurai isn’t going to show him the respect he’s due, the Nintendo Force surely will step up to salute him instead.

But ah, that’s the issue, isn’t it? That’s the question. Is Waluigi a mascot who’s worthy of true love and honest respect – an icon who has wrongly been left out of the lineup of Nintendo’s most prestigious series? Or has his profile and “popularity” simply been inflated by laugh-seeking, meme-loving gamers on the Internet, only crying foul at his lack of inclusion as a joke, when in reality he only deserves the background character treatment he usually gets?

We’ll seek an answer within the pages of this 35th NF edition!

Absence really does make the heart grow fonder.

There was a time, years ago, when Mega Man fans were feeling mega-fatigued. Capcom was publishing so many sequels in so many spin-off series so close together to each other that it was impossible to keep up! Looking back on it now, we should have foreseen the brand’s crash long before it finally happened. Perhaps some did.

But now that Mega Man has been almost entirely inactive for the past several years, I can’t wait to play his latest sequel, Mega Man 11! Had Capcom kept pumping out more and more Mega Man games with that same frenzied pace, then there would be almost no excitement to support this one. It would be “just another Mega Man game.” But given a little breathing room and a fresh creative team unafraid of pushing new ideas into the 30-year-old series, and we’ve got the makings of a major hit on our hands!

We’re delighted to be able to present an all-new issue of NF Magazine with an all-new Mega Man sequel emblazoned across the front cover, in the same way I was thrilled to be able to present Samus Aran’s revival in Metroid: Samus Returns a little less than a year ago. Since she was out of the public eye for so many years leading up to that adventure, we thought it wise to present The History of Metroid in NF #29 to get new fans caught up on her story so far. So it seemed appropriate to prepare The History of Mega Man for this edition!

That’s not all, of course! Our history feature leads into our preview of Mega Man 11 itself, we’ve got interviews with both Mega Man fan community icon Protodude and Takuya Aizu, the President and CEO of Inti Creates who actually brought Mega Man back to life once before, and much more! I hope you’ll enjoy every Blue Bombin’ bit of it!

In this edition of NF Magazine, we’re celebrating the launch of Nintendo’s latest, wildest product line. Nintendo Labo is the most off-the-wall idea the Big N has brought to market since the Switch itself! (Yes, I know it’s only been a little over a year since then, but still!) The same pure creativity and fun that led them to fuse home console and portable gaming together into a single device has now driven them even further into territory never explored before by any other company in gaming, leading to further fusions of the Switch base unit and Joy-Con controllers with a cavalcade of cardboard creations.

We’ve prepared a full Nintendo Labo Launch Guide for your perusal, highlighting each unique build-it-yourself Toy-Con project Nintendo has sent to store shelves to kickstart this new line of products. We also look ahead at a few future Toy- Cons seemingly lurking just over the horizon, then do our best to contextualize the Labo launch in the light of Nintendo’s entire history with an article that looks back on some of the toys they created in the decades before video games came into the world, and then another piece that presents some of the most “disposable” peripherals we’ve seen through their video game years as well.

All that and our exclusive reveal of Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition for Nintendo Switch from Limited Run Games, a company that isn’t exactly building things with cardboard, but is nonetheless making gaming more physical every day! Night Trap finally coming to a Nintendo system is historic, to say the least, so read all about it!

One of the factors fueling the incredible success of Nintendo's Switch is that the system has become a magnet for ports from past platforms. There's just something about the combo console & handheld hardware that makes everyone want to play every game ever made on it, and developers are only too happy to keep pulling great games out of the shadows of yesteryear and re-releasing them in Switch form! We've seen tons of these releases already, and even more are heading our way through the rest of 2018 – like the epic Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, which gathers *12* different iterations of the famous fighting franchise together into a single package!

We take an in-depth look at it, evaluate more modern ports to the Switch like DOOM and Bayonetta 2, and then report on even more ports, like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition and Dark Souls: Remastered!

(Of course, a few original works are thrown in too, just to help us all remember that not everything new on the Switch is actually old.)

Are you familiar with someone "who wears many hats"? Asking about the phrase itself here. If you're not, I should explain in order to make this issue's name and theme make sense – it's a title traditionally given to someone who has a lot of different jobs, but somehow manages to do them all well. Like a busy, overworked parent who's able to balance raising their kids with the demands of their work outside the home, or maybe someone in an office setting who runs around the building serving in several roles while most everyone else sits in one spot, doing just one thing.

We're taking the liberty of applying the title of "The Man of Many Hats" to Mario now, and we do so because, well, of what I just described: Mario is the most versatile character in the history of the video game industry, starring in a huge variety of different games, taking on more roles than anyone else ever has. A platforming hero. A go-kart driver. A prescription-hurling physician, a party animal . . . an Olympic athlete, for goodness sakes! There's nothing he can't do.

That's just covering the figurative meaning of the phrase, though. If you take it literally, it still holds true! Mario has worn tons of different actual hats beyond his signature red cap over the years, both through costume changes and from the power-ups he's grabbed that have shifted his shape and style. We look back on his changeable nature here in this issue, as Super Mario Odyssey is now giving him more wardrobe options and body shapes than ever before, all packed into one epic adventure around the globe! I hope you enjoy this all-new NF issue, and I hope it renews your appreciation for Mario – truly the Man of Many Hats!

So, do you know Samus?

Almost immediately after E3 2017’s back-to-back announcements of Metroid Prime 4 and Metroid: Samus Returns, the thought occurred to me that you may not. Specifically that since some of our readers are young gamers, there’s a real possibility that those back-to-back announcements of two new Metroid titles were met with more of a “Huh?” than a “Hooray!” – after all, it’s been seven years now since she was last cast as the lead character in a game (Other M), and 10 years since she last headlined a game that most people actually liked (Prime 3). A decade is a long time! That’s an entire new generation of Nintendo fans who’ve found their fandom through the adventures of Mario and Link and Pikachu, but probably not Samus Aran.

Let’s change that! Let’s bring everyone up to speed. In this 29th edition of NF Magazine, we’re shining the spotlight on Nintendo’s original leading lady and her epic sci-fi franchise that’s just about to burst back into mainstream recognition with the arrival of Samus Returns. (A more appropriate subtitle there could not be.) We’ve prepared a complete History of Metroid retrospective for you all, going back to the very beginning of the Metroid franchise and tracing each game that’s been released since. That leads into our final preview of Samus Returns, speculation on what the future holds in Prime 4 and more Metroid-related content elsewhere, like our review of the Metroid: Rogue Dawn fan game. Here’s hoping that through this issue of NF you’ll have your memories of Metroid renewed . . . or you’ll be introduced to the adventures of Samus Aran for the first time!

How about that E3 2017, huh? Were you as shocked and surprised as we were? It was incredible to see the power that simply putting the number “4” on the screen can have!

We didn’t know exactly which surprises would be revealed in Los Angeles thatweek, but we knew that E3 could be counted on to bring at least a few out-of-nowhere unveilings. So we planned ahead and made the theme of this issue be “The Element of Surprise!” Within its pages we walk back over the history of big Nintendo surprise reveals and see how E3 2017’s announcements stack up against them.

We also hold a debate on spoilers, interview popular YouTuber Arlo to get his perspective on being a spoilerphobe and also shine the spotlight on Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, which is our cover game for this edition. It was meant to be a surprise reveal at E3 2017 too, but Ubisoft sprung about a million leaks over the eight months preceding the Expo, so we knew quite a bit about the game before its official unveiling! That’s all part of surprise culture in the gaming industry, though, so it’s part of the discussion here.

The Switch has arrived! And in looking for a common thread running through the releases coming just over the horizon for the new two-in-one hybrid machine, the number 2 just kept popping up. Splatoon 2! Xenoblade Chronicles 2! SteamWorld Dig 2! Even the 3DS jumped in to support the trend, as its next major release is Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, a full remake of the second-ever Fire Emblem game (and with two protagonists instead of just one). So this edition of NF Magazine is brought to you by the number 2!

“When Two is Better Than One” is the theme this time around, and of course that meant we needed two central features. The first is “When 2 Was Better Than 1,” taking a look at those moments throughout Nintendo history when sequels arrived that surpassed their predecessors – as many hope our cover game, Splatoon 2, will do. The second is “When Two Players Were Better Than One,” turning back the clock to games from the past that helped the members of our NF team personally connect with co-op gaming.

And, as always, we’ve got News, Previews and Reviews for you all, which is especially exciting this time around because we’ve got our first wave of Nintendo Switch evaluations to share! From The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to 1-2-Switch (see, there’s a 2 again), we’ve had a blast jumping into Nintendo’s new chapter. We hope you’ve been having fun too! As 2016 comes to an end and 2017 is ushered in, Nintendo is in a time of transition. The Wii U is done – its time in the spotlight is over. And the all-new Nintendo Switch is mere months away!

Here in this in-between time, we’ve taken the opportunity to look back and reflect on the entirety of the Wii U era. But it’s not a simple walk down memory lane, because strong rumors suggest that many of Wii U’s biggest hits will be making encore appearances on Switch! Whether they’re presented as ports, sequels, “director’s cuts” or whatever else, brands like Mario Kart, Splatoon, Super Smash Bros. and more look poised to build on the foundations of their Wii U editions and add even more content for Switch.

Of course, the one game that we know for sure is going to appear on both systems is the game we selected to appear on the cover this time. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild gets an all-new preview, plus supporting coverage in our Retro section!

And our featured Interview this time is with André Segers of GameXplain, who nearly lost his mind earlier this year as he worked for months to prepare his epic, crazily in-depth *two-hour* analysis video pouring over all of the footage of Breath of the Wild recorded at E3 2016.

Have you ever walked into a house and thought the paint on the walls was totally atrocious? Maybe the carpet was a horrid color too, and the decorating was disgusting. And yet, the people who live there must love all of those things, or else they wouldn’t have chosen each one! Some people just have different tastes than others.

The same holds true for video games. Over the years, different companies have tried to freshen up aging franchises by giving them fresh coats of paint – introducing striking visual changes in a new sequel, or shifting a series’ style of gameplay entirely. And, every time one of these shiny new paintjobs is presented to the public, you can bet that opinion’s going to be split on whether it was the right decision or not. Some people will love it! Other will hate it. Tastes will always differ.

In this issue of NF Magazine, we find ourselves in the midst of the debuts of several “fresh coats of paint” for many major brands. We have our full review of Mighty No. 9, the fresh take on Mega Man that found millions of dollars’ worth of fans through its Kickstarter debut, but seems to have faltered in delivering with its final product. We have our evaluation of Metroid Prime: Federation Force, a total shift in direction for the Metroid brand that offended countless fans with its first reveal (like walking into a hot pink and pea green living room). We have our thoughts on Pokémon GO’s total reimagining of that series’ core concept of “gotta catch ’em all,” and our cover game, Paper Mario: Color Splash, actually represents a second fresh coat of paint layered over a first! The NF staff debates the merits and failings of them all, so dive in and become a part of the discussion!

This time around, we’ve turned our attention to time itself. Time travel, time manipulation, racing against the clock . . . there have been all kinds of interesting ways that video games have played around with the natural, linear flow of time from one moment to the next, and we’re looking back on many of the great ones to support the coverage of our cover game, Zero Time Dilemma. It may twist time more completely than any game ever has before, as its story is told entirely out of sequence, and so much so that no two players will experience its tale in the same way!

We also scored an exclusive interview with the creator of Zero Time Dilemma and the previous two “Zero Escape” games, Kotaro Uchikoshi. We begin our full coverage of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and take stock of its time travel connections, and we even have an article about the unlocalized Nintendo game that’s all about traveling through time until you come to a final boss fight against a possessed baby Jesus. Say what now? You’ll have to read about it yourself!

In honor of the 10th anniversary of its release in Japan (and its strongly rumored upcoming English-language release), the iconic Mother 3 is the newest game to grace the cover of NF Magazine!

Issue #21 is called "Lost in Untranslation" and turns its attention to the many different Nintendo games of the past few decades that fans living outside Japan never got the chance to play . . . officially, at least. A central feature profiles several of Nintendo's most interesting unlocalized titles, from the well known to the obscure, examining the circumstances surrounding the decisions not to translate each one. Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin, our Interview section subject from Issue #20 and the driving force behind Mother 3's fan translation, returns in this issue with the first installment of a new Legends of Localization column for the Retro section. Tom Lipschultz of XSEED, who just wrapped translation on Return to PopoloCrois, offers us his insights into what goes on during the game localization process.

And much more! The localizations of Nintendo's titles have certainly been a prominent point of debate recently, so the Nintendo Force is diving into the topic, with the troubled history of Mother 3 taking center stage as the focal point of discussion.

The cover art has been crafted by skilled clay modeler Ruy Fernando Estrada Rivera. We're especially excited about how that turned out!

It's NF Magazine's milestone 20th issue! It should come as no surprise that the Nintendo Force team members are major Legend of Zelda fans, and in this issue we celebrate the series' 30th anniversary in a big way: We put together a huge central feature for you all walking through each of the 30 years of Zelda history, chronicling how the franchise evolved one calendar flip at a time! We also spotlighted the unreleased (in America) "BS Zelda" games and Japan's Satellaview SNES peripheral that made them possible, interviewed Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin (author of the new Legends of Localization book series, the first installment of which focuses on Zelda 1), and reviewed both the just-released Twilight Princess HD and the upcoming Hyrule Warriors Legends. (Which, of course, also appears as the cover game.) We hope you enjoy it from cover to cover!

With our first all-new issue of 2016, we're turning our attention to the topic of game delays – since a lot of the biggest games we're looking forward to here in the new year were, at one time, actually promised to be 2015 releases. Mighty No. 9 is our cover star representing the theme, thanks to the multiple delays that pushed his debut back by nearly a year – but it's not all doom and gloom, because our central feature, "Worth the Wait," walks back through 20 major titles from throughout Nintendo's history that all got their release dates pushed back, and all ended up better as a result.

Because we knew exploring alien worlds, taking part in starfighter dogfights in orbit and all of those other wonderfully outer space-y things would be building up in everyone’s minds as a result of the impending release of the all-new Star Wars film, we decided to give NF Magazine’s all-new Issue #18 an outer space-y theme. This one is called “Beyond the Earth,” and it casts its gaze to the heavens to look back at the past several decades of alien planets that pop culture has introduced us to, as well as putting a focus on the new extraterrestrial game experiences Nintendo’s bringing to store shelves soon.

Conveniently enough, the upcoming release of Xenoblade Chronicles X was perfectly timed for this purpose. If you aren’t already aware, it’s all about what happens to humanity when Earth is destroyed, exploding in a massive flash of light – and the few survivors of the blast are forced to flee into space to search for an all-new homeworld for humankind. They find it in the vast, wildly alien world of Mira, and a grand exploration of this new frontier begins.

Xenoblade Chronicles X takes the honor of being our cover game this time around, and also claims one of the two side of the included wall poster for print edition subscribers. On the flipside of the poster, meanwhile, is Nintendo’s other upcoming outer space-y game: Star Fox Zero! Its impending launch inspired us to look back on the history of Star Fox in our Retro section this time around, including a piece that puts the spotlight on the long-lost, never-released sequel, Star Fox 2.

We even partnered with popular YouTuber Beta64 to produce a video on the subject! (Well, he did all the work. We just asked him to do it and interviewed him for this issue.) Visit YouTube and search for "Beta64" to track it down and watch it!

Here's our 16th issue, called "Warning! Construction Zone!" Super Mario Maker has claimed the cover, and its upcoming release has inspired us to look back on the past of user-created content in Nintendo history.

That serves as our central feature, and then Super Mario Maker's influence continues throughout the rest of the issue as well, inspiring us to do a retrospective on Mario Paint in the Retro section, take a look at different ways fans have "made Mario" in Community and have Super Mario Maker itself lead the charge of our E3 coverage through the Previews section this year.

Finally, this is our first issue to be published since the news broke of Nintendo President Satoru Iwata passing away. Please read Page 83 in this issue for more information on how we plan to honor Mr. Iwata.

The Inklings' Turf War has gotten out of control in NF's 15th edition, as the Splatoon cover art has quite literally spilled over into the interior pages. You'll find many more splashes beyond just those inside, though, from an analysis of all the way's Nintendo's PR has set up this all-new IP to succeed to a look back at the push the Big N gave to Final Fantasy on the NES, 25 years ago. Splatoon gets a full review of its own, as does Xenoblade Chronicles 3D – and our featured Interview is with none other than Edmund McMillen, creator of the controversial The Binding of Isaac (which is finally coming to Nintendo platforms). It's the all-new Issue #14, our first issue of the new subscription year since our 2015 Kickstarter campaign concluded! Thanks to all of you who helped to make another year of NF possible!

In this issue, it's a battle of Old vs. New. On the one side, we've got Mario Party 10 representing Nintendo's long-running franchises, while on the other we've got Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. shining a spotlight on new, never-before-seen brands and gameplay ideas. Which would you rather see Nintendo make more of? More sequels to past hits, or more completely original IPs? We dive into the debate inside. So dive into the issue and enjoy!

The final issue of the “Year 2″ subscription cycle, Issue #13 focuses its attention on games that are set apart by bold art. Some visual styles are just so unique, so different from the norm that we can’t help but be captivated by them – like the all-clay approach Nintendo’s utilized for the graphics of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. It, appropriately, appears on the cover.

But that’s not just any cover art! It’s a custom, commissioned all-clay piece created by none other than the fantastically talented Camille Young, who’s returned to contributing to the pages of NF after a two-year absence. I think you’ll agree that her work in capturing the fun of Kirby’s new rainbow-rolling adventure is spectacular!

Also within is a robust Previews section looking ahead to the biggest releases of 2015, a Retro section dedicated almost entirely to the NES Zapper (and the Duck Hunt Dog) and the NF exclusive reveal of the newest game in the Mutant Mudds series: Mutant Mudds Super Challenge! Don’t miss it!

Our final issue of the 2014 calendar year, “The Gratitude Project” is named for our social media campaign that springboarded off of the Thanksgiving holiday. We challenged our readers to use #GratitudeProject and send tweets of thankfulness out to the hardworking video game developers of the world – the people who make our favorite pastime possible! Five lucky readers who participated in the project were rewarded with free amiibo figurines!

Speaking of amiibo, a complete launch guide for the new toys-to-life line was included in this issue as well, along with a focus on Super Smash Bros. as we reviewed both the 3DS and Wii U editions of the new fighting sequel. Don't miss it!

For NF Magazine’s 11th issue, the Nintendo Force presents “Leading Ladies.” Female heroes are in the focus for this edition, as the spotlight shines on Shantae, Bayonetta and the other women warriors who are headlining major new releases in the immediate future – and we also look to the past to name our picks for the Top 30 Leading Ladies from throughout Nintendo history. Our featured Interview profiles a female developer for the first time ever, the Princess NF comics that began in Issue #10 continue and reach their epic conclusion and Hyrule Warriors, led by nearly all playable female characters, takes the lead as our big review. All that and much more are within, so dive in and enjoy the read!

Our theme this time is “When Worlds Collide” as we shine the spotlight on video game crossovers, starting with our cover game, Hyrule Warriors. (It’s a crossover between the Legend of Zelda series and Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors franchise, if you didn’t know.) We’ve got a timeline of important crossover games inside, a Top Ten for crossover cameo moments (when Nintendo characters pop up in games where they normally wouldn’t belong), and a new in-depth Download section article from Emily Rogers called “The Fellowship of the eShop” that delves into why indie developers making games for Nintendo platforms are crossing over their characters with each other so frequently.

Beyond that, you’ll find a massive Preview section covering all of the biggest upcoming Nintendo titles that were showcased at 2014’s E3 Expo, a crossover character guide to 1001 Spikes and a special five-part crossover collaboration between all five of our regular comic artists, who came together to tell one continuous story throughout this edition. The Nintendo Force’s ninth issue of NF Magazine concerns itself with all things Dad – from a central feature focusing on the odd lack of fathers in Nintendo’s franchises to a featured Interview with Matt Bozon of WayForward and his kids at the same time, from the reflections of our own Brett Martin on what it’s like to raise two boys in his world record-holding museum of Nintendo memorabilia to a wide array of special Father’s Day-themed Comic Breaks.
