Dear readers of music, as autumn arrives, concert programmes are being announced one after another. We genuinely wish you will enjoy a lovely concert season. 

In this issue -as the previous ones- various prominent musical individuals analyse their work. Burcu Göktürk, one of the most outstanding representatives of Istanbul’s musical heritage -as a cultural capital its musical roots are beyond centuries- and as a resident of Izmir, she depicts her musical perspective over Istanbul by adding how Istanbul’s music looks from her hometown. An up-and-coming- pianist Elif Ebru Sakar along with her composer personality, also explains social media’s role over sharing her music. 

Alp Yenier, the soundtrack composer of idiosyncratic series -Masumlar Apartmanı indisputably takes the lead- talks about his master, Melih Kibar and Yenier also talks over his stance across today’s music. Neyzen Sinem Hondoroğlu represents her journey of progress, development, being genuine and free spirit. Refik Hakan Talu, one of the wise men of Turkish music and the writer of substantial articles for our periodical, this time puts Artaki Candan under the scope.

When I came to Istanbul to study in the Law Faculty of Istanbul University, I was amazed by the city as if millions of firstcomers do. It goes without saying that Istanbul is magnificent. However, for those who have limited financial sources, Istanbul is definitely not a happy place. Born in a southernmost area of Turkey -in Kilis- and being someone who came to Istanbul 53 years ago from my coming, he cleared the way for innumerable homies. Namely, Alaeddin Yavaşca founded the Kilis Foundation to provide food, dorm and social opportunities for all students from Kilis. Not only did he found this institution but he also was the honorary president of the foundation.
Being the last representative of a culture and era, he touched countless people’ lives and left a great legacy. The more we talk about him and his cultural heritage the better this culture enriches us.
We asked Derya Türkan’s help for the Alaeddin Yavaşca Project. As usually he does, he provided full support and we appreciate that. Intellectuals of music; Hasan Oral Şen, Osman Nuri Özpekel, Refik Hakan Talu and Derya Türkan all wrote about Alaeddin Yavaşca for our readers.

We are leaving behind hard times with a shiny summer. We have all been adversely affected by the pandemic. Seeing the pandemic as a thing of the past is our biggest wish. What we must keep from these days is to remember the significance of the world which is the home of all of us. We should also take care of our houses and give them the proper respect. 
Dear friends, Hasan Saltık passed away. He was an irreplaceable individual. What he did for music and Anatolian culture will never be forgotten. Unfortunately, we fail to keep good souls in this world enough. Bad people cannot get away with what they do. It is this reality that prevents us from losing our faith for justice.

Little did we know that the pandemic with which we met last spring, would affect our lives so radically and drastically. Undoubtedly, the majority were up for the idea “We will stay home for a while and then everything is going to be as it was before.” The reality, however, is way worse...
 
A year passed in terms of our coexistence with the covid-19. Social life was shut down, reopened, reclosed and now it is opened, again. From now on, on condition that social distance rules are taken seriously, everyone is free to go to restaurants, to cafes or even to malls. Nonetheless, people get used to use public transportation, aeroplanes or underground without social distancing rules. There is one reality in this process which is the infeasible state of listening to music even if we submit to the social distance rules. If for another while the current situation continues like that, it is going to be very late. Seeing ex-singers working in different sectors since their only income source had been shut down and they do not receive a salary will highly be likely. Even worse, this will probably end up losing an entire musically-qualified generation. Education of an artist is an arduous process so we must appreciate their worth. Our history demonstrates us with countless examples that having artists in our society is something priceless. 

A fruitful issue is ready for the taking. The best sentence of this one belongs to Prof Dr Fazlı Arslan who says “Reading is the cornerstone of development.” We wish you would be able to switch to white pages that liberate our imagination from black screens which “formalise” our vision.

A nightmarish year has passed away and we welcome 2021 with full of hope. We anticipate the virus that made all of us kneel down -namely the coronavirus- will gradually be vanished. We are all going to see and enjoy the days where the music sector will be out of the woods and will see sunny days. 

This issue hosts Asu Maralman whose art carreer went beyond a half century. In the interview she talked about her memories, experiences and dreams.

Moreover, a famous artist Ross Daly analysed “Labyrinth Online” which is the most important online musical education platform of the world by revealing their work and answering the frequently asked questions about Labyrinth.   

What we all know is music is a beyond-border tool. This issue also contains the story of Serenin whose roots date back for centuries and it is a pure example of international musical interaction. The project "Common Musics of Genoa and the Black Sea" under the leadership of Davide Baglietto and Edmondo Romano will undoubtedly make its mark as well. 

In addition, a Turkey-lover and a grammy-awarded musician Maya Asucena talked about her new project and her observations over Turkey. 

Finally, this issue will also include: an up-and-coming musician Merve Akyıldız, a Turkish music history master Refik Hakan Talu and "Musixen" which is a life-saving application for musicians during the pandemic thanks to its ability to create new income sources.

We are happy to embrace you with our rich new edition. Undoubtedly, one of the most negatively-affected elements of the coronavirus precautions is the musical events. Maybe the concerts had to be cancelled but artists continued to reach us thanks to the digital platforms. We enhanced our souls with the power of music. We are appreciated for all of these artists. 

You are going to notice that, in this edition apart from Turkey there are also precious music producers from Iran, Greece, Netherlands and Canada. Introducing you various musical colours from different regions of the world and witnessing that our periodical is one of the worldwide ones in its field is an additonal satisfaction.  

Music is an energy source for a nation. We fervently emphasise the necessity of supporting these labourers who produce music and assisting them with solid steps.  

Having the belief that we have overtaken the hard times, we wish all of you fresh and healthy summers with plenty of music. 


Dear readers, owing to the coronavirus outbreak we have been falling on hard times in these days. As humanity, we will overcome this obstacle by consciously struggling. When it is all over, maybe we will raise the proper awareness for the old order of the history of mankind and our planet which is our home. And yet, we gratefully appreciate our doctors and all health care personnel who persevere for our well-being.

We are also grateful for our artists who have been feeding our souls with their music on the internet since we must stay at home in order to be protected from the spreading of virus.

Concert halls and entertainment venues were the first places that have been shut down in order to prevent the outbreak of the coronavirus. During this difficult situation, we share our expectation that Mr Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, the Ministry of Culture could interfere in the crisis to create financial sport programmes for the artists who were adversely affected from the outbreak having to delay their schedules. 

As usual, the tenth issue of Makam Music Periodical is authentic and full of new material. The spring edition contains various articles from precious artists in which they share sequences from their glamorous careers...

Dear readers, as Makam Music Magazine, we wish you a happy new year with health, peace and bliss in 2020. We salute our third anniversary with this very issue 9. Once again, we are more than happy for offering you different colors and tastes in music with satisfying and genuine contents.

This issue welcomes Ara Dinkjian, a man of music, who is very close but is also beyond the ocean as he continues his career in New York. He opened his heart and showed the courtesy of answering our questions about music.

Indispensable for radio and television shows, Mustafa Sağyaşar is our guest for the “Memories” section of the magazine and he told us about his 67 years in art.

The doyen researcher and author Murat Meriç told us about “Hayat Dudaklarda Mey”, his praiseworthy book that narrates the stories of the songs from the Ottoman to the present.

Mehmet Şükrü Alkan, the head of the mehter platoon, told about “Mehter”, the most ancient military orchestra in the world.

We talked with A. İmre Tüylü, who organizes a festival after her late sister and well-known harpist Ceren Necipoğlu who we lost in a plane crash ten years ago. The “Ceren Necipoğlu Istanbul International Harp Festival” will be held on January 15. Go through our pages for details.

The researcher Burak Süme released his most recent work on the “Benliyan Troupe and Leblebici Horhor Ağa Operetta”.

As Makam Music Family, we have left behind our first year together with you. Every issue we prepared was more meaningful and more comprehensive with supports from you.
The citylines ferry, which was named after Prof. Dr. Alaeddin Yavaşça, began voyages to the blue waters of the Bosphorus.
We start this issue with our children who are our future. We are hosting the Borusan Children's Choir and well-regarded conductor, Gülsen Yavuzkal.
The archive of Dr. Şehvar Beşiroğlu, who is always memorialized with mercy and gratitude, was donated to the ITU Turkish Music State Conservatory by her elder sister Lawyer Beyza Koral.
The last part of our journey to the recent history of Turkish music with Kudsi Erguner is allocated in this issue for you.
More than six hundred new works were competed in the 100th year Üsküdar Music Society Turkish Classical Music Composition Contest. Kolektif Istanbul group has told the story of past 15 years to our magazine at the celebration of its 15th anniversary. “Cafe Aman Istanbul” group, which gave the Istanbul City Music concerts to the choke-full of audiences for two nights in the the famous Megaron concert hall of neighboring capital city Athens, brings out the different colors of Istanbul. One of the greatest voices of the century, Kani Karaca was told with his different aspects by his son Mehmet Ali Karaca for our valuable readers.

Müzeyyen Musical Theater finally opened the curtains. It is worth watching the musical which was prepared with intense efforts of the distinguished artists. It is a great achievement for our country to remember with a fascinating musical such a precious artist who has written her name to the republic period. With the best known words, “the older the wiser”, however we wish the young generation better understands the art values of this land. 
You have heard the great composer Avni Anıl and his memories from many valuable artists. We rewrote the famous composer through the eyes of his son, Ezgi Anıl. In the International Violin Competition in Hungary, our young violinists returned with four awards. We have a special interview about the valuable work of the conductor Suat Sancar, the flag bearer of Turkish Music in London, and the award given to him by the Queen of England.
