We continue with the theme of the 10th Anniversary Edition of Designyatra, in the blood Red Kyoorius Magazine 27.
What pumps your heart? We explore the individual journeys of varied people from the world of design, entertainment, entrepreneurship, architecture and photography and ask them the simple question, discovering the seeds of their motivation in turn.
In this issue, we also continue with the 2-part series on movie posters, this time bringing out the quirk and creativity in alternative posters and those made for independent cinema. We travel through the dusty, nostalgic BEST Museum, peering at the collections of old employees wide-eyed; and spend A Day in a Printing Press witnessing stories being stitched together.
While Neeta Premchand talks us through the history of handmade paper all the way from Daulatabad, Neelakash Kshetrimayum tries to revive Bengali through his digital fonts. Sunit Singh, SVP of Product Design at Ola, and Jay Dutta, Head of UX at Flipkart tell us more about the industry that intrigues us so – the making of Indian-made apps.
What does creative sustenance truly mean? Is it not the ability to sustain one’s work financially as well and not just make pretty objects? We answer some such questions in The Business of Design. Mohor Ray furthers the argument with her discourse of mainstream work vs. self-initiated work; finishing with a lovely personal letter from Michael Wolff, which builds on his series on service design and the lengths that creatives must go to, to fulfill their customers.

In Kyoorius 25, we explored Kitsch, the overwhelming and overstated style of design and art, which surprisingly doesn’t seem to have a definition. What is kitsch, and is it really such a bad thing? Chumbak, India Circus, Kulture Shop, Happily Unmarried and Filter (Alok Nanda & Company) tell us what they understand of kitsch.
The much awaited results of the Kyoorius Salary Survey have been documented, with insights into the sticky topic of money from professionals in creative fields who tell us of on-ground realities. Alongside, we look at the Z-Axis Conference which we attended in March at Goa, and talk about some issues surrounding urban planning in India.
With the Cricket World Cup frenzy comes a trail of creative work – advertisements, posters, apps, websites, and motion graphics – people go all out using the momentum of the sporting event to promote brands. From Nike to ESPN Cricinfo, Bombay Duck Designs, By Two Design, we profiled a few of the interesting picks. Excerpts of conversations with Jessica Walsh of Sagmeister & Walsh and 
Rit Mishra, one of our columnists and lead service and interaction designer at Idean, talks about Service Design, while Hyper Island’s Christina Andersson explains how predicting trends is important for all businesses. Cyrus Daruwala, creative director at Alok Nanda & Company, vehemently and rather humorously urges us all to ban meetings while on a more serious note, Michael Wolff emphasises the role of designers in making lives better.

This time around, we’ve tackled the big, messy subject of education, but from the eyes of high school students – What do they think about design and how do they find out about courses?
Architects learn from Kutch artisans at Hunnarshala, Prasoon Pandey and Vinil Mathew talk about the old and new state of ad filmmaking, and Raj Kamble and Ravi Deshpande tell us about ditching the name brand agency and setting up their own shops. Cult music label Bhavishyavani Future Soundz share their posters over the years, W+K Delhi’s Sunaina Sainath is convinced that design for children is all about interactivity, aka ‘You upon a time’, Bharat Tiles, a 90+ year old company is innovating its signature heritage tiles, offices are not quite what they seem – as we find out; and at the end of another Big Fat Wedding season, we went behind the scenes with one of the unsung wizards behind those elaborate sets. To top it all off, our columnists Tina Mehta (Lightbox), Vineet Gupta (22feet) and Michael Wolff, give us their precise, thought-provoking views on what’s occupying them at the moment.

With our first issue of 2015, we’ve explored a simple yet complex question – What does design mean to you?
For Neeraj Kakkar, co-founder of Paper Boat, it is the essence of the company he’s helped create – from the product to the brand and packaging, to the way the company itself is run. For online furniture sites such as Pepperfry and Urban Ladder, it is the driver behind a shift in their customers’ buying behavior who are increasingly looking for well-made and designed pieces to decorate their homes. For Daniel Jackson of Cord Worldwide, with whom we had a long chat about music, Pavlovian responses and the fake sound of money in ATM machines, it is creating emotional connections with sound.
In the Special Report, we attempt to understand design across geographies, speaking to creatives in Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan, searching for parallels and contradictions across these diverse places.
There is a growing interest in the role design can play in effecting change and improving the lives of people from all levels of society. Harsh Purohit of Cognito explains the misunderstood concept of sustainability as applied in Corporate India; on the flip side, we spoke with Nawneet Rajan, who through Technovation in Dharavi, uses technology to empower young girls and women in underprivileged areas.
To close out the issue, our columnists Mohor Ray (Codesign), Christina Andersson (Hyper Island) and Michael Wolff touch on different issues affecting designers today – from working in a studio environment to adapting to digital, to understanding Money.

Sunaina Sainath of Wieden + Kennedy Delhi writes about the breakout of ‘Nichebusters’ amongst the Indian youth. Nichebusters break the norms, take the path less travelled and almost always define their own identity through this determined journey of self-realisation. As a parallel, we investigate what the demographic of ‘Youth’ means – is it merely an age, or is it a matter of attitude? What appeals to the ‘youth’, what works and what doesn’t.

The Special Report takes a closer look at Crowdsourcing – a rising trend among companies and agencies. Vineet Gupta of 22feet Tribal Worldwide explains how India is taking a more grown up approach to digital, as clients are realising its real potential beyond ‘likes’ and ‘shares’.
We pay tribute to cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma, while Sujatha Shankar Kumar writes for us about ‘typography in publishing’ inspired by a talk by Rathna Ramanathan of Tara Books, in Spotlight.

As a conclusion, Michael Wolff sends a heartfelt letter on love, life and experiences post his recent 80th birthday.

The 19th issue of Kyoorius Magazine is out and here is glimpse of what’s inside:

In this issue, we have explored the association between a city and a creative individual through an interesting project, Creative Cities, in which curators from ten cities in the APAC region identify works by various creative individuals based on how they interpret the city they inhabit.

In both our Dialogue section with Rajiv Rao, national creative director, Ogilvy & Mather India and ‘My Life in Design’ with tsk Design’s Tania Singh Khosla, we have specifically asked them about the influence of cities in their creative process, among other things.

In our Special Report for this issue, we have extensively covered the awe-inspiring and absolutely brilliant street art festival- St. ART- organized in the city of Delhi by Hanif Kureshi. Kureshi, of course, has already been doing some incredible work in this space with his HandpaintedType project. We have also gone in-depth in the report to analyze the contemporary street art “culture” in the various cities of India.

We have tried to decode the book cover design space in India by talking to various inhouse designers, publishers and authors. We got some great insights from Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, HarperCollins India, Hachette India, Penguin India and independent publishing houses Yoda Press and Navayana.

For the ‘Origins’ section, we spoke to the student of the first ever batch of National Institute of Design (NID), Vikas Satwalekar, who has not only served extensively as a design educator but has also been behind creating some of the most iconic and original identities in India including Doordarshan, Hindustan Lever (now Hindustan Unilever) and Mother Dairy.

In ‘The Designer’, we learnt about the fascinating process of kite making from kite designer Ahmed Kazi.

For Output, we have a study from W+K Delhi called ‘Blind Spot’ which classifies the aesthetics of middle class into seven interesting categories.

And W+K’s Sunaina Sainath has written a terrific piece for us ‘Politics by Design’ in which she has envisaged the three major political parties of the country, Aam Aadmi Party, Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janta Party, as living rooms to define their visual imagery and what it stands for.

In this issue, we have also got glimpses into the work desks of a few creative people from all across in our ‘My Work Desk’ feature. In his new column, Wally Olins talks about how India wins hands down when it comes to how he likes to eat. And we also have wonderful Michael Wolff who has once again written a deeply personal and insightful letter for each one of our readers.

To kickstart this year, we have many little surprises for you – firstly you will be greeted by a brighter, better and slimmer issue of Kyoorius Magazine, and secondly, you will now be getting the magazine every two months. Turn of the year somehow has a vibe to it that strongly invokes reflection of the year gone by and things that can be made better for next year. And that’s never a bad thing. So for our first Special Report of this year, we decided to go on with the tradition of making resolutions by asking various design professionals in India to reflect back on 2013 and give us some interesting insights into 2014.

For our new ‘Output’ section, we have an interesting infographics project The Ballot.

The “local” designer featured in this issue is Sheikh Sameer who is a furniture designer at a street side shop in Mahim, Mumbai. Sameer not only took us through the nuances of designing and carving beautiful wood furniture, but also told us about his eclectic set of customers including the Indian film industry and clientele from Gulf countries.

Through our new ‘Origins’ column, we will bring you some inspirational creative stories from the archives, beginning with Aabid Surti’s iconic cartoon character Dabbuji.

The Spotlight section collates the Kyoorius team’s interesting experiences during its trip to London in September last year to cover one of the most recognizedgraphic design events in the world, AGI Open.

The team took a tour of the offices of D&AD, Creative Review and Big Active to find out what goes on behind the scenes.

For the Columnists section in this issue, we have two of the most senior and brilliant designers in the world: Michael Johnson and Mike Dempsey. You surely cannot miss those wonderful pieces.

In this issue, Delhi based Lopez Design’s founder Anthony Lopez takes us through his life in design in this issue, along with a sharp Q&A addition where we ask him about his thoughts on the issues in the contemporary design space, his next big project and his studio’s name.
