Welcome to the November 2019 issue of Parvati Magazine. We have all heard the saying, “home is where the heart is”. It is both an internal and external place where we feel loved, whole, and a sense of belonging. One of the most powerful symbols of home throughout history is the hearth, the fireplace at the heart of a dwelling where people gather for food, warmth and companionship. 
As a touring musician, I have come to rely on my meditation and yoga practices to provide me with a sense of inner home, no matter where I may be physically. My body is like a temple in harmony with the universe. Its hearth is the light of my soul. My truest home is in the world of sound. I revel in it through the stillness of meditation, when creating music, and when anywhere in Nature, which to me is a symphony of sounds. My daily go-to-happy-place is in songwriting, composing, producing and performing music. It provides a harmonious recharge of life-force energy that nourishes my being. Welcome to the June 2019 issue of Parvati Magazine, dedicated to MAPS, the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary. All of us at Parvati Magazine are still catching our breath after the devastating loss of one of Parvati.org’s initial members, Darcy Belanger. But MAPS lives on and will be realized. Darcy demonstrated faith and courage, and that is how we move forward. As it was for Darcy, all my work on MAPS has been a repeated call to faith, to take bold leaps into the unknown, trust and expand to meet unforeseen possibilities. I recall a moment I had when I was on the road, making connections for MAPS. During a meditation, I saw beneath me a bridge of light. I could not see it with plain sight, but in surrender, in openness, in trust, I saw it there, carrying my every step. It calls me to live right here, right now and give this moment all I have. Many Parvati.org volunteers have had similar experiences, whether travelling halfway across the world or finding their phone ring with a key official on the other line ready to talk about MAPS. This month’s issue is on the theme of faith, that is, the energy of love and compassion that moves us forward in trust in the greater good. Welcome to the April/May 2019 issue of Parvati Magazine. This is a special commemorative edition dedicated to Darcy Belanger, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Parvati.org, Director of Professional Development at PCL, husband, son, and friend to many. Darcy died aboard Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on March 10, 2019 on his way to champion the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary (MAPS) at the United Nations Environment Assembly. The day Darcy passed, the world felt smaller and darker. We were in mid-production on this month’s Parvati Magazine, but I knew immediately that we needed to pivot and dedicate this issue to Darcy and everything he gave to MAPS. There is no way to measure the value of a life. The thought feels like trying to fit the infinite into a teaspoon. As both founder and CEO of Parvati.org and Editor-in-Chief of Parvati Magazine, I offer Darcy’s story through the eyes and hearts of all of us who worked alongside him over the years, to illustrate the courage with which he lived and his lasting effect on us and the world.

It is so inspiring to see MAPS grassroots initiatives grow worldwide, in particular in Africa now, in support of UNEA.

One of the most important mentors I had in my early years was my maternal grandmother. She taught me about life, spirituality and being naturally myself.

A significant teaching of hers was that each of us has two inner channels we can tune into: one that leads to suffering for all, and the other to greater love and service. The subject this month, “Being”, is so close to my heart that for a while, I called my blog posts “Being Love Letters”. If you meditate, you may know of the space between breaths, the momentary pause that exists between the inhale and exhale. It is the space between thoughts that opens the gateway to the underlying reality of pure consciousness beyond the grip of the thinking mind.

Athletes and artists touch this place when they are surrendered to their task and time dissolves, the sense of separate self is gone and all that exists is the perfection of what is. Lovers touch this place when life feels perfect, whole, as though million-watt bulbs were just turned on and everything bloomed into technicolour. Heroes touch this place when they throw all caution to the wind and dive into a seemingly impossible situation, experiencing the momentary death of their ego, expanding into the realm of eternal possibility. This is the space of beingness.

As I said in a recent interview with Cashbox which I share in part in this issue, “My biggest source of creative inspiration is Nature: its sounds, its rhythms, its voice. It is symphonic and multidimensionally so rich, open and whole. I strive to express that beauty, power and wisdom in my songs and productions.”

The immense creative force and wisdom that arise into form all around us exist within us too. We touch it each moment in imagination, creativity, surrendered service. I find this both deeply humbling and vastly inspiring. It reminds us that we have a choice about what we create in our lives, whether on a painter’s canvas, an audio track, a written page, or simply in each moment that unfolds.

MAPS, the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary, began with an imaginative vision for a healthy and safe world, where Nature’s voice could be heard again. Today, that vision is becoming a reality in international law.

I love this inspiring quote from the great modern dancer Martha Graham, said to be like the Picasso of dance:

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action. Because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions… You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”

As you choose the light of your own true nature, you light the light of hope, interconnection and grace. You ignite your passionate fire that fuels the joy of your being. You open yourself to a field of possibility far beyond what you could know staying small, feeling disconnected and alone. As you choose the light of your true nature, you light the way for others to do the same. In this way, the courage to make a healthy choice benefits not only your own life, but all of life. You become the light of love for all beings, everywhere.

A new year is beginning, full of promise. How you embrace its potential for the highest good in your own life and in the world depends on the choices you make in each moment. You always have the choice to either assert your ego, or to rest in the knowing of your inherent interconnection with all that is. As such, everything you do, think and feel literally affects everyone and everything. When you meet what is with an open heart and mind, the riches of each moment unlock for you. There is no need to push your will upon the here and now, for that will only bring suffering to you and others. Instead, the assertion of your deepest soul knowing and luminous heart will always guide you to that which is best for all. One could say that the right use of will is a yogic practice: balanced, present, surrendered, and in flow. It is a complete and absolute “YES!” in your every cell to your soul’s joy, a total release of all thoughts of anything else being your purpose. Joy is your purpose. So by focusing unequivocally on your joy, you align yourself with universal, divine will.
