Two essential nutrients to keep on your radar this season
-
Feeling sluggish or rundown this winter? The answer may lie in a lack of nutrients from your diet or reduced sunshine exposure. We take a closer look at vitamin D and magnesium, why they matter and the simple ways to boost your intake.
VITAMIN D
No sun? No problem! There are other ways to up your intake. As we spend more time inside and less time absorbing vitamin D from the sun, it can be difficult to maintain healthy levels. But as nutrition scientist and dietitian Dr Joanna McMillan explains, there are other ways to ensure we're getting enough.
Why we need it
“Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium, and its utilisation in bones and teeth. The main symptoms of deficiency are related to bone health,” says Joanna. Issues like improper bone development in children or softened bones in adults can lead to problems like bone pain, osteoporosis and increased risks of falls and fractures.
“There is also emerging evidence showing that vitamin D is necessary for the immune system. Low levels increase the risk of respiratory infections and slow wound healing,” she adds. Not getting enough vitamin D may also exacerbate asthma, affect insulin production, increase the risk of some cancers, and impact cognition and brain function.
Getting enough
You can top up your vitamin D levels through food or supplements if you're not getting enough from the sun, but they offer different benefits.
