WHY OMEGAS ARE IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN'S HEALTH

From brain development to emotional balance, omega fatty acids play a vital role in wellbeing at every stage of life - particularly during childhood.
-
In conversations about healthy eating, omegas often appear tucked between discussions of vitamins, protein and fibre. Yet omega fatty acids are foundational to both physical and emotional wellbeing. These fats do essential work behind the scenes, especially for children, whose brains and nervous systems are developing at remarkable speed.
Understanding what omegas are, why they matter and how to include them in everyday family meals can help parents make small, nourishing choices that add up to meaningful, long-term benefits.
WHAT ARE OMEGAS, EXACTLY?
“Omegas” is a shorthand term for a group of essential fatty acids - most commonly omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9. They're described as essential because the body can't produce them on its own, meaning we must get them from food.
Each type plays a distinct role in health:
✓ Omega-3s support brain development, emotional regulation and heart health
✔ Omega-6s contribute to growth, skin health and immune function
✔ Omega-9s support cardiovascular health and help regulate inflammation
While all three matter, omega-3s tend to need the most attention, as many modern diets don’t provide enough.
OMEGAS AND THE DEVELOPING BRAIN
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are central to brain development. DHA makes up a significant portion of the brain and retina, supporting the formation of neural connections involved in learning, memory and emotional regulation.
During pregnancy, infancy and early childhood, adequate omega-3 intake helps lay the foundations for cognitive development. For little ones, this translates into support for their concentration, problem-solving and cognitive flexibility.
