Dyspraxia can shape how a child experiences the world - but with understanding and the right support, children can build confidence, resilience and a strong sense of self.

SUPPORTING A CHILD WITH DYSPRAXIA

If your child struggles with coordination, finds everyday tasks unexpectedly tiring or becomes frustrated by things that seem to come easily to others, you may have come across the term dyspraxia. Also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), dyspraxia affects how the brain plans and carries out movement.

While dyspraxia is a lifelong neurological condition, the right support can make a profound difference to a child's wellbeing, confidence and self-belief.

UNDERSTANDING DYSPRAXIA (DCD)

Dyspraxia is a neurological condition affecting motor planning and coordination. It has nothing to do with intelligence, effort or motivation.

In fact, many children with dyspraxia are highly creative, thoughtful and articulate.

What they often struggle with is translating intention into action. This can affect:

✓ Fine motor skills, such as handwriting, using cutlery or fastening buttons

✓ Gross motor skills, including running, jumping or riding a bike

✓ Organisation, sequencing and time management, which can impact learning and emotional wellbeing.

Understanding dyspraxia as a difference in how the brain processes movement - rather than a lack of ability - is key to offering meaningful support.

HOW DYSPRAXIA CAN AFFECT DAILY LIFE

Every child experiences dyspraxia differently, but common challenges include clumsiness, fatigue, slow processing of instructions and difficulty learning new physical skills.
