JO CLARKE CONSIDERS A WORK BY 19TH CENTURY ARTIST RICHARD HENRY CARTER

ARTIST Richard Henry 'Harry' Carter was born in Truro in 1839. He originally undertook an apprenticeship as a stationer and then worked as a clerk, living with his mum, siblings and grandparents after his father died.

His earliest recorded works of art date from the early 1860s when he exhibited in a range of London galleries, including the Royal Academy (he would continue to exhibit there until 1908).

In 1866, he married in Truro, and it's believed that he and his wife Ellen went on to have at least three children. In the 1871 census his occupation is listed as both an accountant and an artist. A decade later, the census records him as a landscape artist and cashier.
