Seven migrant labourers, including five from Madhya Pradesh, were killed and five others injured after a huge granite rock slid down from the top of a quarry and crashed onto workers below in Bengaluru Urban district on Thursday.
Police said the incident appeared to have been caused by negligence.
The accident occurred at a quarry in Madapattana, located in Bengaluru Urban district near the border with Bengaluru South district. Initial police information had suggested that most of the victims were from Bihar, but officials later clarified that five of those killed were from Madhya Pradesh, one was from Chhattisgarh and another was from Yadgir in Karnataka.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Central Range) S Girish said around 16 labourers were working at the quarry when the accident took place. According to him, the quarry had two crushing units, one situated at the top and another below, with work underway at both locations.
