Ree's inspiration for a clothing collection came to her early in life. "When I was 3, I had a dress that was, prophetically, a red bandana print with a smocked bodice, ruffled sleeves and a prairie skirt," she says. "I've always loved cute clothes!" The budding fashionista went on to win Best Dressed in seventh grade and launched The Pioneer Woman clothing line with Walmart in December 2020. It sold out within days. From the start, Ree's goal was to offer "pretty, easy, comfy, flirty and flowy clothes" at real-life prices for real-life bodies (sizes range from S to XXXXL). The fall offerings include plenty of Ree's trademark blousy tops, tunics and dusters, plus new additions such as handbags, sleepwear and outerwear. Finding the Perfect Mix
The design process is similar to cooking: You need good ingredients, and they have to blend well! Ree starts by assessing colors and making sure nothing is ever ho-hum. Unique combos like pink and red are always appealing. "I don't like my eyes to feel sleepy!" she says. She gets inspiration from the ranch. The golden hour-right before it gets dark-helped Ree select the ideal gold tone for her fall collection. The patterns she chooses from are original designs, and flowers are a must. "They're the foundation of my wardrobe," she says.
Bringing the Bling 
The necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings are pure Ree. Jewelry is new to The Pioneer Woman line, and she made sure there are lots of gold-toned pieces and big dangly earrings-which she often wears and chunky bracelets as well. There's a rustic side to the jewelry, with the earthy colors of the stone beads and leather-like tassels, plus fun multistrand necklaces and bracelets that are right up Ree's alley. As with the collection's clothes and shoes, Ree had a hand in every part of the process. Giving some a test run is a definite job perk!

Getting in the Mood
Designers often put together mood boards to kick things off. This one, for Ree's fall pieces, speaks to Ree's style and her life in Pawhuska and inspired the colors and feeling of the collection: romance on the ranch. Of course a photo of The Merc had to be in the mix. "We sell some clothes from the collection there, and it's my happy place," says Ree. Boots were a must-pin too because everything needs to look good with them! (This is the first time The Pioneer Woman line has included footwear.) Once colors and patterns are chosen, Ree says, "I'll review sketches of silhouettes, then make tweaks till they feel right, like doing a three-quarter sleeve instead of short one." Fabrics are chosen at the same time. When clothing samples come in, like this peasant blouse, they may get hung on the board to see how they fit the mood.
