लगभग गभग 35 साल का एक खान आंगन में आकर रुका। उसकी आवाज सुनाई दी, \"अम्मा... हींग लोगी ?\" भीतर से नौ-दस वर्ष के एक बालक ने निकलकर उत्तर दिया, \"अभी कुछ नहीं लेना है, जाओ !\" पर खान भला क्यों जाने लगा ? जरा आराम से बैठ गया और अपने साफे के छोर से हवा करता बोला, \"अम्मा, हींग ले लो, अम्मा ! हम अपने देश जाता है, बहुत दिनों में लौटेगा।”

युधिष्ठिर नाम का कुम्हार एकबार टूटे हुए घड़े के नुकीले ठीकरे से टकराकर गिर गया। गिरते ही वह ठीकरा उसके माथे में घुस गया। खून बहने लगा । घाव गहरा था, दवा - दारु से भी ठीक न हुआ। घाव बढ़ता ही गया। कई महीने ठीक होने में लग गये। ठीक होने पर भी उसका निशान माथे पर रह गया।

कभी-कभी मूर्ख मर्द जरा-जरा सी बात पर औरतों को पीटा करते हैं। एक गांव में ऐसा ही एक किसान था। उसकी औरत से कोई छोटा-सा नुकसान भी हो जाता, तो वह उसे बगैर मारे न छोड़ता। एकदिन बछड़ा गाय का दूध पी गया। इस पर किसान इतना झल्लाया कि औरत को कई लातें जमाईं। बेचारी रोती हुई घर से भागी। उसे यह न मालूम था कि मैं कहां जा रही हूं। वह किसी ऐसी जगह भाग जाना चाहती थी, जहां उसका शौहर उसे फिर न पा सके।
