How Is A 40 Something Year Old Supposed To Ride?

More and more lately I have been hearing people comment to one and other whilst out riding, “you’re not 20 any more you know”. Which has gotten me thinking, how is a 40 something year old supposed to handle themselves whilst out razing along the trails?

THE MAJORITY OF MY FRIENDS, RIDING AND OTHERWISE HAVE EITHER VISITED THE POPULAR TOURIST SPOTS OR HAVE NEVER BEEN AT ALL. IT’S AN AREA THAT ESCAPES A LOT OF PEOPLE’S ATTENTION AND I DON’T KNOW WHY.

SUPERSTITION IS RUBBISH

WHEN YOU NEED ANSWERS, THE INTERNET IS A PRETTY GOOD PLACE TO START FOR A VERY MEDIOCRE KNOWLEDGE OF JUST ABOUT, WELL, ANYTHING. PLUS, IT’S THE FIRST POINT OF CALL FOR ANY MEDICAL SELF-DIAGNOSIS, WHICH I GOTTA SAY, IS PROBABLY TO THE DETRIMENT OF THE HUMAN RACE… SO WHEN MY DELUDED HEAD NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND A LITTLE MORE ABOUT SUPERSTITION ALONGSIDE MY SUPPOSED MENTAL STATE, WELL, LET’S JUST SAY I WENT THERE. TO QUOTE THE ENDLESS SUPPOSITORY OF WISDOM AND JUNK CONTENT OF SAID INTERNET:

Chapter No.2 - A Life Being Rebuilt

LAST ISSUE I ATTEMPTED TO BRING [R]EVO READERS ALONG WITH ME FOR THE BEGINNING OF A TRANSFORMATION FROM A MAN WHO USED TO BE FIT AND FOR THE MOST PART HAPPY TO THE BOTTOM OF AN OVERWEIGHT, LAZY DEPRESSED SLUMP AND BACK AGAIN. THIS IS PART TWO OF THE STORY AND ONE I HOPE YOU ENJOY. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A STORY OF MOTIVATIONAL FITNESS ALTHOUGH I DON’T MIND IF YOU DRAW MOTIVATION FROM IT. WHAT IT IS, IS A STORY THAT SOME MTB RIDERS MIGHT BE ABLE TO DRAW OUT SOME LIFE LESSONS FROM FOR THEMSELVES. A ROAD MAP FOR PEOPLE IN GENERAL TO BE ABLE TO PICK THEMSELVES UP AND GET BACK IN THE GAME. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY I WEIGHED AN UNHEALTH 124KGS AND THEN SOME AND BY THE END OF THE LAST ISSUE I HAD LOST A WHOPPING 8 KGS IN LESS THAN A MONTH. TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF THE EFFECT 8 KGS HAS ON YOUR RIDING. GO TO YOUR FRIDGE AND PICK UP A FULL 2 LITRE BOTTLE OF MILK. NOW IMAGINE 4 OF THOSE STRAPPED ON YOUR BELLY AS YOU RIDE UP A MOUNTAIN. ONE THING I CAN SAY IS MY TYRES HAVE NEVER HAD SO MUCH GRIP.

Liv X Stu Launch Women's Specific Mechanics Course

“Providing This Course Was Important To Us On So Many Levels. Despite An Increasing Number Of Women Finding Joy In Riding Bikes, There’s A Disproportionate Number Of Women Compared To Men That Are Working With Bikes. This Initiative Has Given The Participants A Huge Boost In Knowledge And Skills, And By Being More Visible In The Workshop And The Sales Floor, They Are Role Models To Other Women And Young Girls To Also See Bikes As A Viable Career Path. Here At Liv, We Do More Than Manufacture Bikes For Women. We’re About Making Cycling More Approachable And Appealing. Creating A Course Like This Means More Women Working In Bike Shops, Female Consumers Feeling More Comfortable In Those Spaces, Andultimately The More The Sport Will Grow. Supporting Women Who Have Invested Their Livelyhoods In The Industry Helps Us And Our Retailers Retain Talented Staff.” - Caitlyn Hargreaves, Australian Brand Manager For Liv Cycling

UNTIL A FEW MONTHS AGO MY BIKE HAD 100MM OF SUSPENSION TRAVEL, TWO GEAR RINGS UP FRONT, 10 AT THE BACK AND NO DROPPER POST. AND AT 55, WELL I’M OLD ENOUGH TO BE THE AVERAGE [R]EVOLUTION READER’S DAD, OR GRANDAD TO SOME YOUNG RIPPERS.
