A Game - Changer Among Mobile Phones
TRACKING THE LEGENDARY SMARTPHONE OVER TIME
By now, it feels like almost everyone who’s anyone owns an iPhone. The constantly evolving smartphone is about to get another make over with the release of the much anticipated iPhone 8. The iPhone was released 10 years ago this week, on 29th June 2007, and to commemorate its anniversary, we decided to take a look back over the years to where it all began.
A TRIP BACK IN TIME
To really understand the impact Apple has had on our lives with arguably the most iconic series of phones ever, we need to start at the very beginning with the invention of the telephone.
The telephone was invented by Scottish-born scientist Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 and has undergone various dramatic transformations over the past 141 years. However, it wasn’t for another 100 years that the first mobile phone was created, in 1973.
THE FIRST MOBILE PHONE
The first mobile phone was successfully created by Martin Cooper at Motorola. The first call made on the device was by Cooper to a rival company, boasting that he was talking on a mobile phone. The phone weighed a whopping 1.1kg and took 10 hours to charge, which it’s fair to say is simply unimaginable by today’s standards. The phone could be on standby for around six hours and the call time was only 30 minutes. It was a fiendishly expensive, but groundbreaking device and led the way for many mobile phones to come.
We can all remember these first mobile phones, which weren’t in fact very mobile at all. It wasn’t until over 17 years later that the market started to see mobile phones that actually were mobile. Nokia released its first mobile device in the early 1990s, the Nokia 6110.
