NEW HUAWEI FOLDABLE ECHOES DESIGN OF APPLE'S RUMORED IPHONE FOLD

Huawei has unveiled the Pura X Max, introducing what it describes as the industry's first “wide-format” foldable smartphone — a design choice that closely resembles ongoing speculation about Apple's long-rumored iPhone Fold.

The device departs from the tall, narrow folding designs that have defined much of the category in recent years. Instead, Huawei’s approach emphasizes a broader display ratio intended to improve media viewing and multitasking.

Consumers in China can already pre-order the Pura X Max, with Huawei promising additional technical details at a followup event scheduled for April 21.

A SHIFT AWAY FROM TALL FOLDABLES

Most foldable smartphones currently adopt a vertically elongated outer display that opens into a nearly square tablet-style inner screen. Huawei's Pura X Max takes a different route.

The phone unfolds into a wide-format display that more closely resembles a compact tablet in landscape orientation. The approach mirrors earlier experimentation in the market, notably the Google Pixel Fold, which paired a 5.8-inch outer screen with a 7.6-inch internal display designed for horizontal usability.

Huawei argues that the wider aspect ratio enhances video playback, document viewing, and side-by-side app multitasking. By reducing the need to rotate content or adjust layouts, the design aims to create a more natural viewing experience.
