Rome – The Layered Metropolis

I first visited Rome as a student more than ten years ago, so I had some fond but faint memories of the city.

So this year, when the opportunity presented itself to spend time in the capital during my recent trip to Italy, I was intrigued. Nostalgia, unfinished ambitions and curiosity to see whether one of the oldest cities in the world had transformed in the interim drove me once again to Rome.

The highlights of my trip were two very different but intertwined experiences. The first was a walk through the ancient parts of the city, which was made less touristy and more enriching thanks to the fact that it was led by an American school teacher, who had lived in Rome for nineteen years. We traversed on foot through the central parts of the Old city, and soaked in all the must-dos such as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.
