AGARTALA | JULY 3, 2020:

In a heartbreaking incident, a man in Tripura committed suicide after failing to provide an Android smartphone to his daughter.

According to Sepahijala district police chief, Krishnendu Chakraborty, “A man identified as 45-year-old Sukumar Bhowmik was pressured by his 15-year-old daughter into buying an Android smartphone. However, he could not afford a smartphone and bought an ordinary phone instead. When Sukumar gave the new mobile phone to his daughter, she refused to accept it as she needed a smartphone for her online coaching. Sukumar’s wife and daughter also scolded him for not buying an Android smartphone.”

Chakraborty said that Sukumar tried to explain to his wife and daughter by telling them that he did not have the money to purchase an expensive smartphone. However, they berated him and his daughter broke the new mobile phone by throwing it on the ground.

Dejected and humiliated, Sukumar committed suicide by hanging himself in the early hours on Wednesday.

“Sukumar was a day labourer by profession. He maintained his family, comprising three children, his wife and himself, by his meagre daily earnings that had come down because of the COVID-19 induced restrictions,” said a close relative of Sukumar.
