Why is the big corporation so reviled?
However dearly people have held them, small businesses have long since been left behind. Their distinguishing characteristic – size – is an insurmountable handicap. Businesses thrive when they are productive, competitive and innovative. All these are beyond small businesses because they lack scale. However, the champions – large corporations – are the objects of almost universal scorn. They have been the cause of a series of high profile scandals. But not every big business is guilty. In fact, the vast majority of them create high quality jobs, provide a global competitive edge to Sri Lanka and contribute taxes. All over the world, the reason for the disparity is identical – smaller the firm, the lower the productivity. A family farm or small factory is a hopeless occupation and even with the preferential and low income tax of 16% instead of the standard 24%, these businesses have no future. Worse still, misaligned incentives like low taxes, subsidies and eulogizing small businesses has the chilling effect of artificially prolonging their existence at great cost to the rest of the economy. If policy shifts towards providing a level playing field, small businesses will be in for hard times. If they stay in the shadows they will be slowly eased out of supply chains. Their only shots at longevity are consolidation or attracting capital and scale – both tough asks for a small firm.
