The Desire to Be Rich—and Right
“The immediate pressure of necessity has brightened their intellects, enlarged their powers, and hardened their hearts,” observed H.G. Wells. Necessity sharpens faculties—but not always for the better. Clarity of purpose can come with narrowing vision and progress with the risk of moral drift. Consider investor behaviour. For years, Sri Lanka’s equity market was shaped more by sentiment than substance. Quick wins took precedence over long-term value. That is beginning to change, one contributor in this edition suggests. A shift toward fundamentals signals a maturing market—and a recalibration of risk, discipline, and reward. Yet another problem persists: many people still fail to grasp why and for how long they need to grow their wealth. Politics, too, is subject to the same tension. The government’s renewed focus on investigating past abuses during the JVP insurrection is framed as a pursuit of justice. But its scope is selective, centring on state-sponsored violence. In doing so, it risks overlooking that both the state and insurgents inflicted lasting harm. Meanwhile, a proposed legal amendment to fight corruption and financial crime seeks to transfer the burden of proof from the prosecution to the defence—guilty until proven innocent. Necessity may again be shaping the narrative but not necessarily broadening it. Ends often justify means in hindsight. The challenge is noticing when they begin to define them.
