Scots still alive despite epic comeback falling just short
-
SCOTLAND are still in the hunt for an automatic World Cup spot - despite losing to Greece on a bonkers night in Athens.
Steve Clarke's side failed to get the point they craved to guarantee a Group C winner-takes-all clash with Denmark on Tuesday night.
But what they didn't expect was for the Danes to drop two against Belarus in Copenhagen.
Their shock 2-2 draw against the section's minnows kept them just one clear of the Scots in the table.
That means Clarke's boys WILL get their cup final at Hampden in midweek and a chance to claim top spot.
They were second-best against the Greeks, who led 3-0 after an hour with goals from Takos Bakasetas, Konstantinos Karetsas and Christos Tzolis.
At that point, the World Cup dream looked to be hanging by a thread but goals by Ben Gannon Doak and Ryan Christie got Scotland right back in it and only Greek keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos in inspired form kept them out.
At full-time, the players waited on the pitch until they heard the result from Denmark, knowing a late goal would have consigned them to the playoffs.
But when it was all over, the Tartan Army let out a roar which told them they still have a golden opportunity on Tuesday night.
CRAZY NIGHT
This was a mad night of football at the Karaiskakis Stadium in that match that could easily have finished 7-5 to Greece.
Not only that, with goals flying in over in Copenhagen as well, the Tartan Army were taken on a bigger emotional rollercoaster than usual watching their side.
