Looking for a great deal that won't bust your wallet this year? AMY JONES has the lowdown on where's best to take a holiday if you're on a budget in 2026
AS WE start a new year, many of us will turn our attention to our next getaway. Happily, finding some sunshine doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. There are many excellent European destinations offering an affordable escape, whether you're looking for a sun-soaked beach getaway or a city break to explore the history.
In January, several major airlines are running sales, while hotel booking websites also offer discounted rates. Additionally, the first month of the year is the prime time to scoop up discounted holiday packages, helping you book that dream getaway for less.
In addition to the online deals, which are definitely worth checking out, it’s helpful to know which destinations are most affordable once you've arrived. To help spread your costs even further for your 2026 trip, we've outlined 10 of the cheapest European destinations that are well worth a visit.
Bordering the Adriatic Sea and neighbour to Croatia and Albania, is Montenegro, an under-visited European gem. Its seaside resort of Budva is one of the most popular areas, boasting stretches of golden sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, while offering a vibrant nightlife and historic Old Town.
Montenegro is generally much more affordable than Western European countries and the more touristy hotspot of Croatia. Consumer champion Which? found that local beers like Niksicko and Pivo will set you back around £2-£3, while an hour's bus journey can cost around £5-£8. Visitors have often praised the cuisine, with some meals costing as little as £10. While peak time is expected to be more expensive, there are plenty of budget-friendly accommodation options. Flights to Montenegro start from £37.
