Rajat Subhra Bandopadhyay, a Delhi-based watercolour artist with over 40 years of experience, is known for his striking landscapes and unconventional subjects like rust, stone, and sackcloth. What is the name of your collection and what is the story behind it?

My latest collection is titled “Face Off”. It is a portrayal of self-expression through the mask. The mask represents transformation, a desire to reinvent oneself. It reflects the many roles we play in life, be it upholding the truth or staying true to ourselves. I have worked with many different compositions, but the mask has been a unique metaphor for me. It's not about hiding, but about becoming different.

What's the inspiration behind your latest work — a thread, a question, a feeling?

I believe beauty exists everywhere, often in places easily overlooked. As an artist, I aim to represent what is seen and also highlight the unseen. It includes textures, patterns, and subtleties that speak volumes. I work with wood, stone, and even gunny sacks, where each carries its own rhythm, and value, forms the foundation of my compositions.
