VICTORIA WRIGHT ON PHOTOGRAPHING COWGIRLS LEADING HORSE TREKS INTO THE FORESTED WILDS OF ALBERTA FOR OUR JUL/AUG ISSUE

HOW I GOT THE SHOT

Tell us about this image.

I was deep in the backcountry of Alberta, exploring Banff National Park on horseback. This young woman, Lola Jung, was our lead guide. She was calm, capable and always ahead with her horse and mule, keeping a watchful eye on the rest of us. I wanted to capture that duality in her body language — the steady stride forward, the slight turn of her head to make sure we were all doing okay. There was something about her presence that mirrored the place itself: rugged yet composed.

How did you achieve the shot?
