TESLA SHARES RISE AFTER MUSK CONFIRMS DRIVERLESS ROBOTAXI TESTING
AppleMagazine
|December 19, 2025
Tesla shares moved higher after chief executive Elon Musk confirmed that the company has begun testing fully driverless robotaxis, marking a new phase in Tesla’s long-running effort to commercialize autonomous driving.
-
The confirmation came amid heightened investor attention to Tesla’s autonomy roadmap, which has increasingly become central to how markets assess the company’s long-term prospects.
Musk said the testing involves vehicles operating without a human driver behind the wheel, a distinction that separates the current phase from Tesla’s earlier supervised Full Self-Driving system. The announcement followed months of speculation about when Tesla would move beyond driver-assisted autonomy into real-world testing of vehicles operating entirely on their own.
The market reaction reflected how closely Tesla’s valuation is tied to expectations around autonomy. While Tesla continues to generate most of its revenue from vehicle sales, investors have repeatedly focused on the potential of robotaxis as a future growth driver that could reshape the company’s business model.
WHAT TESLA HAS CONFIRMED ABOUT DRIVERLESS TESTING
According to Musk’s comments, Tesla has begun limited testing of driverless vehicles, though the company has not disclosed the size of the fleet, the geographic scope, or the duration of the tests. Tesla also has not detailed whether the testing is taking place on public roads under regulatory approval or within controlled environments.
Tesla’s existing Full Self-Driving system requires a human driver to remain attentive and ready to intervene. The confirmation of driverless testing signals a shift toward removing that requirement, at least in certain scenarios. Musk has previously said that Tesla aims to operate robotaxis without steering wheels or pedals in the future, but such vehicles have not yet entered production. This story is from the December 19, 2025 edition of AppleMagazine.
