A McKinsey Global Survey from March 2025 highlights that 77% of tech professionals believe AI will transform their roles within five years, boosting productivity but also displacing tasks like coding and data entry.
For tech workers, employers, and policymakers, this shift in the $2 trillion AI market signals a need to adapt swiftly to harness Al's potential while addressing its disruptions.
From automating routine tasks to creating new roles like AI ethicists, AI is redefining how tech companies operate, with over 50,000 layoffs in 2025 linked to its adoption.
AI'S GROWING FOOTPRINT IN TECH
Al's integration into tech workplaces is accelerating, with companies like Microsoft and Salesforce leveraging it to streamline operations. The McKinsey survey notes that 56% of tech tasks, such as writing and coding, are now augmented by AI tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot, which can generate reports in minutes, cutting task times by up to 30%.
Generative Al, attracting $33.9 billion in global private investment in 2024, is a key driver, enabling automation of repetitive processes and enhancing data analysis for roles like software engineering.
This surge has led to measurable gains-Al-driven productivity in tech firms rose 5% annually since 2019, per industry data. However, it's also sparked layoffs, with over 50,000 tech workers cut in 2025 as companies pivot to Al-powered systems.
JOB DISPLACEMENT AND NEW ROLES Al's automation of tasks like coding, where 30% of Microsoft's and Google's code is now Al-generated, has reduced demand for low- and mid-level programmers, with job postings for these roles dropping 21% in 2024.
