A couple of years ago, I met a very successful spinal surgeon. His life story was a true rags-to-riches journey marked by resilience and determination. Growing up in a single-parent household with limited financial support, he overcame immense odds to finance his education with student loans and multiple part-time jobs.

When we met, he was in his late forties, already a top specialist in his field and earning over R4 million per year. On the surface, he appeared highly successful, with luxury cars, a beautiful home and an enviable lifestyle.

However, after a deep dive into his finances, it became clear that he had almost no savings, was drowning in debt, and was living paycheck to paycheck.

From hardship to success This surgeon's career journey was inspiring. Years of relentless effort and sacrifice had paid off, enabling him to reach the pinnacle of his field and earn a high income.
