OVERHAUL: WORKING TOGETHER, HE REGAINED CONTROL AND TURNED HIS SITUATION AROUND

- Hardi Swart

Helping Rich Man Not Be Poor

A couple of years ago, I met a very successful spinal surgeon. His life story was a true rags-to-riches journey marked by resilience and determination. Growing up in a single-parent household with limited financial support, he overcame immense odds to finance his education with student loans and multiple part-time jobs.

When we met, he was in his late forties, already a top specialist in his field and earning over R4 million per year. On the surface, he appeared highly successful, with luxury cars, a beautiful home and an enviable lifestyle.

However, after a deep dive into his finances, it became clear that he had almost no savings, was drowning in debt, and was living paycheck to paycheck.

From hardship to success This surgeon's career journey was inspiring. Years of relentless effort and sacrifice had paid off, enabling him to reach the pinnacle of his field and earn a high income.

But as his earnings grew, so did his spending.

He owned a sprawling luxury home with a significant mortgage. He financed multiple high-end vehicles. His lifestyle included frequent exotic holidays, fine dining and expensive hobbies.

What should have been a success story of financial freedom had instead become a cautionary tale of financial mismanagement.

It feels silly to even suggest this, but based on the performances of the country's strong spin bowling contingent, Keshav Maharaj's place in the national Test team might be in danger.
