Massive rise in 'deathbed weddings' to cut tax bills

A GROWING number of unmarried couples are arranging so-called “deathbed weddings” to beat the taxman and cut their inheritance tax liabilities at the last minute.

The number of urgent, “short-notice” marriages has jumped 14% over the past five years, according to TWM Solicitors.
In 2024, 1,612 couples tied the knot at short notice, up from 1,420 in 2019, and their numbers are set to grow as more couples realise the tax implications of failing to get married.
